Manchester United return to Champions League action against Roma on Tuesday evening.
Manchester United are back in the Champions League on Tuesday evening, as they face high-flying Roma at Old Trafford.
Michael Carrick's last match against an Italian team was a 4-1 drubbing in Como, which saw Bruno Fernandes call out the tactics in a post-match interview.
Fernandes returned to the side against Chelsea and looked closer to his former self, though it was not enough for United to get on the scoresheet.
Roma have lost just one match this season – a 4-3 defeat to Real Madrid – and sit third in Serie A, one point ahead of Cesc Fabregas' Como.
On Saturday, they tasted victory once again, as they netted five away from home against Udinese.
Roma boss delivers worrying "confidence" claim
While Roma are on red-hot form, they have yet to have a player register more than three goals so far this season.
Speaking after the 5-2 win against Udinese, he said: "Sometimes the numbers do tell you the story.
"Besides scoring lots of goals, we’re also scoring with many different players.
"That shows how much confidence there is in the team: lots of players believe they can make a decisive contribution, be it with an assist or a goal. We’re scoring more goals with more players and that’s a great sign."
Roma's confidence will be a worry for Manchester United, who have looked anything but confident so far this term.
The first 45 minutes against Chelsea were a notable improvement from Michael Carrick's side, but missed chances, poor defending, and individual mistakes left United without a chance after Lisandro Martínez's red card.
Carrick's important Martínez call
Lisandro Martínez is already on his second chance at Manchester United, having been immediately returned to the team after publicly calling out the executives and Jason Wilcox in a post-match interview after the 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid.
Whether Carrick trusts him to play on Tuesday evening will be an important call for the head coach, and perhaps his last big decision at Old Trafford.
Leny Yoro could return to central defence, having been used as a makeshift right-back in recent weeks, while Ayden Heaven will also be hoping for a return to the starting side.
Matthijs de Ligt is another option, but he has not seen the pitch since his return to action against Como in the Champions League.
Carrick, of course, could continue with Martínez, but with just over six months left on the Argentine's contract, some have questioned his commitment to the club, especially after his succession of yellow cards at Stamford Bridge.
Manchester United need to be at their best if they want a result on Tuesday evening, though their best has been far from good enough this season.
