Manchester United’s star striker faces a gruelling road to recovery as recurring injuries threaten his future, leaving his national team boss pleading for patience and expert rehabilitation.
Benjamin Šeško has suffered a series of injuries since his £73.3 million move from RB Leipzig to Manchester United in the summer of 2025, beginning with a shin injury after a push from Ibrahima Konate against Liverpool.
Since then, the Slovenian has had a turbulent road to recovery, managing just 76 minutes in the Premier League this season. His injuries have kept him out of the national side for almost a year.
Between his injuries, Michael Carrick unlocked a great side of Benjamin Sesko, with the giant striker tallying 11 Premier League goals last season thanks to the service of captain Bruno Fernandes as Manchester United claimed a third-place finish.
The striker is out with the same recurring injury after Manchester United's 3-2 defeat to Brighton in the Carabao Cup. This has sparked concerns within the Slovenian camp over Sesko's fitness for the future, with the 23-year-old being a star player in Bostjan Cesar's squad. The Slovenian manager has since spoken out on Sesko's situation, with no clear date set for the forward to return to action.
Slovenia Boss Shows Support To Sesko
Speaking in his press conference prior to Slovenia's match against Scotland in the Nations League Group B, Bostjan Cesar gave his opinion of Sesko's state, with concerns growing.
He stated: "This isn’t an easy time for Benjamin. He is going through a difficult period in his career. As we know, he hasn’t suffered many injuries in the past. It is an atypical injury that requires time to heal."
"The most important thing now is for Sesko to surround himself with people he trusts and believes in, and for everyone around him to remain positive. Because that is what he needs. He needs time, he needs good rehabilitation - and Slovenia needs him too, once he is fully healthy."
Among doubts over Sesko's commitment to the national side, Cesar answered with great empathy, stating: "We know that when you play for such a big club, things like this happen."
"It is a process that not only Benjamin goes through, but all footballers do. Naturally, there was no such criticism when he was fit and scoring goals. He’s aware of this. He is a professional. I believe he doesn’t read these things or let them weigh on his mind."
"He is a young player, and things are moving incredibly fast in his life. But he has already made the mental shift. His mind will have to make such transitions in the future as well."
The primary matter of course is Sesko's long term fitness, as rushing him back from injury could only do more damage.
Sesko Looking To Bounce Back
After his unavailability for selection was confirmed, Sesko was quick to speak out to his nation, taking to social media explaining his conditions and making his intentions clear.
His statement read: “I am very sorry that I will have to miss the next matches of the national team. I have always played for Slovenia and will always play with heart and pride.
“The most important thing now is to fully dedicate myself to recovery."
Manchester United fans have begun to wonder whether United will look into the striker market in the January transfer window, but the emergence of Shea Lacey could see Bryan Mbeumo shift to the number nine position like last season, when United saw great success.
For now, Sesko's focus remains on his road to recovery as United look towards Tottenham Hotspur after the international break, with much change already needed this season.
