Roundtable understands that Manchester United have activated the optional extension in Ethan Ennis' contract and are looking to offer him a new deal.

Manchester United EXTEND Ethan Ennis' contract!

Harry Maguire's contract extension in April appears to have triggered a wave of activity at Manchester United before the Premier League season ends. The England international signed a new deal, with his previous contract set to expire at the end of this season.

Kobbie Mainoo has also signed a new deal to keep him at Old Trafford for a further five years. Mainoo looked close to leaving the club under Rúben Amorim, but short-term head coach Michael Carrick has reinstated Mainoo in the starting lineup and helped him find a new level of form.

Director of football Jason Wilcox will be planning for United's next season, when they look set to return to the Champions League, after a brilliant end to the season under Carrick.

New central midfielders appears to be the priority, with Casemiro leaving the club and Ugarte looking likely, too. A left-back and a left-winger also seems to be on United's wishlist.

Planning the next 12 months for the talented youngsters coming through the academy will be another element of Wilcox's planning, including those who have been out on loan this campaign.

Sources: United extend Ennis contract

Ethan Ennis has enjoyed a season-long loan in League Two with Fleetwood Town. The 21-year-old has helped them to a solid mid-table finish in the competition with three goals and seven assists.

Roundtable understand that Manchester United have agreed to activate the one-year extension in Ennis' contract, which will see him remain at the club until the end of the next campaign.

Sources say that United also want to offer Ennis a new two-year deal, but there are several clubs looking at signing him permanently. The Englishman has yet to make a decision on his future.

Ennis has started 35 matches in League Two this season, many of which came at right-wing-back. He largely played as a forward in United's academy, but has proven he can be a versatile option.

United's academy talent

Ennis returning could see one of United's promising under-21s attackers go out on loan, or even leave the club permanently, next season.

Shea Lacey is unlikely to leave the club after his exciting cameos against Burnley and Brighton and Hove Albion under Darren Fletcher. Injury has held him back from more first-team minutes under Michael Carrick, but he has returned to the under-21s setup for now.

JJ Gabriel and Noah Ajayi are the standouts in the under-18s side. They can both play on the left flank, while Gabriel can play across the frontline, and have terrified young defences throughout the season. Ajayi has made his under-21s debut, but Gabriel cannot until next season due to age restrictions. The duo also seem unlikely to leave on loan without a full U21s campaign under their belt.

United have been linked to several attacking options this summer, while Marcus Rashford's future remains up in the air

However, the return to the Champions League could allow for an inflated squad compared to this season, with just 40 games to be played for United.
