SullyTalkz Exclusive: Despite a disastrous two-win start, Old Trafford officials are standing by their manager while demanding immediate tactical evolution and a definitive end to the club's winless streak.

Michael Carrick must become more flexible to keep his job!More Videos

Manchester United's season so far has been nothing short of a disaster, with the club securing just seven points from their opening seven Premier League fixtures of the 2026/27 campaign.

After a 2-0 loss on the opening weekend against newly-promoted Hull City, United defeated Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford on gameweek two, but that has been their only league win so far this season.

A 4-0 win against Sabah FK in the Champions League provided some hope, but since then United have gone on a six-game winless run, including losses to Brighton & Hove Albion, Manchester City, and Atletico Madrid.

A recent 1-1 away draw against Leeds United has provided a small ounce of hope, as the strong performance against a well-organised team was one of United's better results this campaign, but another league draw is not enough.

Sources: Carrick retains United's backing

After a poor start to the campaign, there has been a lot of talk about whether Carrick will keep his job. Two wins in ten games across all competitions this season is United's worst start in a long, long time.

However, sources have informed Roundtable that, despite outside pressure, the United head coach continues to retain the club's board's backing as they prepare to face Como away in the Champions League.

Amid a meeting with football director Jason Wilcox on Monday, the club chiefs continue to have faith in Carrick, but they have made clear that this backing is contingent not only on an upturn in results but also on an improvement in the team's overall performance.

There has been criticism from fans and pundits that United often look flat and uninspiring on the pitch compared to last season.

Carrick adamant that a fresh start is on the horizon

United's last three league results have all ended in 1-1 draws. Before the international break, it drew 1-1 with 20th-placed Fulham, then 1-1 with 20th-placed Tottenham Hotspur just after. Next came the 1-1 draw against Leeds.

However, the fixture at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon had a different vibe to it compared to others. United felt more aggressive, on the front foot, and dominant.

Carrick's side looked less flat, more inventive, and more forceful against a tough and rugged Leeds, with Carrick himself explaining after the game he felt, while United were not getting carried away, that the performance was a bit of a fresh start.

“We’re not getting too carried away because we haven’t won the game," the United coach said to the media after the draw.

"But if you keep doing the right thing for the right reasons then you get what you deserve in the end. It felt like a bit of a fresh start today, if I’m being honest. Where we’re at, accepting it and doing something about it.

"It definitely shows that the boys are desperate, really desperate to do well for each other. There was a real purpose to the group over the past few days, and they took it onto the pitch. That was a tough game today.

"They can find you out pretty quickly and the boys stood up to it really well.”
