Lisandro Martinez is the hot topic right now in the world of football after his comments against the Manchester United board on Tuesday night, and despite many opposing his views, a rather unlikely source has backed him.
One of the main reasons people oppose the Manchester United defender is speculation that Lisandro Martínez is deflecting attention from his recent poor form.
An own goal against Fulham, followed by almost 90 minutes of being bullied by Spurs' Dominic Solanke, who eventually scored the equaliser, and now yet another uninspiring performance against Atletico, just to name a few recent examples.
Furthermore, many believe that he has thrown his own teammates under the bus with his comments, adding fuel to the fire, which is the last thing Man United needs after the start to the season they have had.
However, most United fans feel the complete opposite. They believe that he is not slating his teammates, but rather stating that there have not been enough editions to the team that finished third in the league last season, mainly due to only having one game a week.
Therefore, from this perspective, he is actually defending Michael Carrick against the club's hierarchy.
There is quite a divide between the fans and the pundits on this matter, and it is fascinating to see that Steven Gerrard, of all people, has bridged the gap with his comments.
Gerrard's recent comments
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has openly supported Lisandro Martinez's words on The Overlap this week, despite many of his colleagues doing the opposite.
“That tells me that the senior players are talking about it, as a group. I’m just thinking it doesn't help Michael [Carrick] on the eve of playing Leeds at the weekend. It's more negative. It tells me that they're not aligned as a club.
“But at the same time, I agree a little bit where sometimes a player comes and does an interview and it's robotic, and he just straight bats every question, and say, not honest enough, they're boring, blah, blah.
“So I admire the fact that he's tried to be honest and open. He's actually tried to protect Michael Carrick in a way, but he's made a bigger mess.”
With someone as 'anti-united' as Steven Gerrard weighing in in agreement with Martinez, it has a huge impact on the debate.
People associated with the club will have a biased viewpoint, whatever way they look at it; therefore, hearing someone from the outside agree with the player in some ways, almost makes Martinez's points stronger.
Was Martinez right to do what he did?
Firstly, whether he was right or wrong in this situation is a matter of personal opinion, as many factors shape what he said and why.
If his intentions were solely to secure the club's future and aid the fans' fight against the Glazers and the failing board, fans would, overall, agree with his statement.
If these comments were purely to save his own skin after yet another poor performance, or if he wants out of the club and to air his frustrations publicly before he leaves, then I disagree with him.
However, there is a belief that the former viewpoint is true, and recent reports have backed up my belief that, regardless of how much time he had left on his contract, he would have said the same.
His actions do hinder the team as they will already be void of confidence after the start to the season, therefore adding more doubts around the team is obviously not helpful.
However, fans have reacted so positively to this news because it is refreshing to see players with a bigger voice use it to attack those most fans think are really to blame.
The repercussions of his actions remain uncertain, and the impact of his comments on the team's performance against Leeds this weekend is yet to be seen. The next few weeks will certainly be huge for everyone involved at Manchester United.
