Noussair Mazraoui started the first game of the season against Hull City at right-back, having also been given the nod for the final pre-season match against AC Milan, but has played deputy to Diogo Dalot since the opening day. 

The Moroccan struggled against the newly-promoted side, but has shown he can be a vital asset to Michael Carrick in the past. 

Since moving to Old Trafford, Mazraoui has played right-back, right-wing-back, left-back, left-wing-back, centre-back (in a back three and a back four), and even No. 10 in the Champions League under Erik ten Hag. His versatility knows no bounds. 

For Morocco, Mazraoui is the first-choice left-back, with Achraf Hakimi playing on the right-hand side. The Manchester United defender often impresses in the role, and he scored from there on Friday evening. 

While Mazraoui has been poor for Manchester United this season, his performance for Morocco shows exactly what he can do, even when playing out of his favoured position. 

In AFCON qualifying, the former Ajax defender kept a clean sheet, scored a goal from outside the box, created one chance, made 12 passes into the final third, made two tackles and made three interceptions. 

Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu have shared the left-back role at Old Trafford this season, with the former returning from injury against Fulham. 

But Mazraoui should be handed an opportunity on the left side of defence, especially given that games will come thick and fast after the international break. 

Manchester United return to action with the visit of Tottenham Hotspur, before a trip to Atletico Madrid and Leeds United. Ties against Como, AFC Bournemouth and Chelsea make up the rest of October. 

With so many games before the start of November, Michael Carrick could be forced to look towards the youth at Old Trafford, and Harry Amass should be at the top of the list. 

The former Watford youngster looked set to leave Manchester United in the summer, but a move did not go forward, despite interest from Burnley and other Championship sides. 

He has featured on the bench this term – against Brighton and Sabah FK, in which he played 18 minutes – but has yet to make the squad for a Premier League tie. 

Carrick will want to be careful with Shaw, so Amass could be handed more opportunities from the bench, especially in the Champions League. 

Other youngsters who could feature are Tyler and Jack Fletcher in central midfield, Noah Ajayi (who has just signed a new contract) on the left flank, and Jaydan Kamason at right-back.
