Cash-strapped Barcelona eye a permanent move for the thriving winger, but a clash over loan terms and payment structures looms as Manchester United demands immediate funds.
Despite his recent England call-up for the upcoming World Cup, Marcus Rashford's future next year is still heavily unknown. The Manchester United winger has been out on loan this season, at FC Barcelona, where he has thrived, putting up his best numbers since his incredible 22/23 season.
Unsurprisingly, this had led to interest from the Catalonian side, with the La Liga champions wanting to bring on Marcus Rashford on a permanent basis; however, Barcelona's recent financial issues could make this deal an issue.
Barcelona are expected to lose Robert Lewandowski as a free agent this summer, and that does leave Barca quite light in the forward department, so there will be an expectation to pursue Rashford.
Barcelona only interested in another loan deal
According to Sport, Barcelona do want to pursue the signing of Rashford, but only as another loan. However, this time a permanent obligation to purchase the England international upon the end of the 26/27 season would be inserted in the deal.
In the United camp, they are not entertaining the idea of the obligation to buy Rashford with the club feeling confident that Barcelona will budge and go in for a permanent deal with United wanting cash in hand to prepare for their anticipated blockbuster summer transfer window.
Michael Carrick is expected to take up a larger role this summer, with more say in transfers than Rúben Amorim. This could include a pursuit for Rashford's replacement.
It is felt that Rashford wants to stay in Barcelona to play his football, and this could also play in Barcelona's hands if Rashford is equally pushing for a move.
There is currently a €30 million release clause for the purchase of Rashford, with Barcelona expected to try to negotiate the price down if they are to bring in Rashford on a permanent basis.
Does Rashford have a future at United?
It feels strange saying that Rashford doesn't have a future at Old Trafford, with the 28-year-old playing 426 times and scoring 138, cementing his legacy as one of the recent greats at Old Trafford.
However, it feels that there is a new era at United since Michael Carrick's appointment with the side back in the Champions League. It does feel understandable that United are trying to fade away players who could remind them of the older, darker times.
It is impossible to dismiss Rashford's talent, though, with him having been the starlet of United for multiple seasons. But his inconsistency between seasons led to his first loan out to Aston Villa, then to Barcelona, where it looks inevitable he will end up.
