Once regarded as one of Europe's elite goalkeepers following standout spells at Ajax and Inter Milan, André Onana has struggled to replicate those levels since arriving at Manchester United.

Even so, the expectation going into the 2025/26 campaign was that the Cameroonian would remain at Old Trafford and compete with Altay Bayındır for the starting role, with the Turkish international beginning the season as the club's first-choice goalkeeper.

However, it was clear throughout the summer that United were keen to strengthen their options between the posts. The club eventually secured the signing of highly rated Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens, adding further competition for the position.

Many anticipated a three-way battle for the No.1 shirt under Rúben Amorim, but Onana's future took an unexpected turn when he was sent on a season-long loan to Trabzonspor. The move, which did not include an option or obligation to buy, came as a surprise given his experience and standing within the squad.

While it took a couple of fixtures for Lammens to be given his chance, he set the tone for his maiden season at Old Trafford by keeping a clean sheet in his debut against Sunderland, something that has been hard to come by at United in recent seasons.

Since then, he has firmly established himself as the clear starting keeper between the sticks, adding a much needed air of calmness at the back.

As a result, a future with Onana remaining at Manchester United past this summer is looking more and more unlikely, with Turkish giants Beşiktaş reportedly set to battle Trabzonspor for the Cameroonian keeper.

The 30-year-old performed well during his loan spell in Turkey, conceding just 42 goals in 34 appearances, leading to Trabzonspor wanting to make a permanent move.

According to Fotomaç, however, believing that Trabzonspor won't be able to make a good enough offer, Beşiktaş have begun negotiations with United. United want to sell the keeper to reduce their wage bill, but could also be open to sanctioning another loan deal.

Last summer, United's keeper targets reportedly reduced to two options: the established Premier League goalkeeper, Emi Martinez, or the relatively unknown Royal Antwerp keeper, Senne Lammens.

While many would have expected the Aston Villa keeper to make the switch from Birmingham to Manchester, United's data analysis pointed to Lammens being a clever pickup, rating highly in key areas such as claimed crosses, shot stopping, and preventing goals from rebounds and mistakes, while also making the most progressive passes for any goalkeeper under the age of 23.

He has proven to be an absolute bargain of a signing at just £18.1 million, proving to be an excellent last line of defence, and was key in United's qualification for Champions League football.

Across his 32 top-flight appearances, the 23-year-old averaged 2.5 saves per game, boasting a 67% success rate, and keeping eight clean sheets as United lost just four times when he started.

As a result, he was rewarded the inaugural Transfer of the Season award, beating out the likes of Rayan Cherki, Antoine Semenyo, Joao Pedro and Viktor Gyokeres.
