Manchester United are focused on trying to secure a plethora of new midfielders this summer as Michael Carrick leads his first full transfer window in charge of the squad.
Despite finishing third in the Premier League last season, it's widely known that United's midfield lacks depth and quality.
Casemiro is leaving at the end of this month once his four-year contract expires, while Manuel Ugarte is a player United are open to offers for and has been linked to clubs in Turkey and Italy.
If the above duo depart, this would leave 21-yera-old Kobbie Mainoo as the club's only senior midfielder, meaning up to three more will ahve to be signed if United want to become competitive on all four fronts.
United pushing Fernandes talks
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, West Ham's Mateus Fernandes is being hotly pursued by three clubs – Real Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester United.
While the 21-year-old was brought up by Jose Mourinho in a recent transfer meeting within the Los Blancos hierarchy, Romano explained on his YouTube channel that it's the two Premier League sides who are being much more 'financially aggressive'.
It's stated that both clubs want to conclude a deal as soon as possible, with United 'pushing' both his agent, Jorge Mendes, and West Ham in recent days to try and secure a solution.
At the same time, Romano only states that Spurs have been in contact with Mendes, suggesting that the North London club are yet to contact the Hammers directly surrounding a possible transfer.
United keep asking about Summerville
Beyond their interest in Fernandes, Romano also further explained that United "keep asking" about West Ham's Dutch winger, Crysencio Summerville, who has been a standout during the 2026 World Cup so far.
Following his long-range strike against Japan last weekend, reports emerged that United have the 24-year-old on their transfer list as a possible left-winger option, but that West Ham would demand around £50 million for his signature.
Romano's interesting update suggests that United's interest has gone beyond simply appreciating the player and that they are genuinely exploring the terms of a transfer.
For United to sign a new winger, it's likely the space may have to be made in the forward department, with the Old Trafford outfit open to offers for striker Joshua Zirkzee.
Zirkzee has somewhat failed to impress since signing for the club in 2024 but is still widely appreciated in Italy after he won Serie A Young Player of the Year following a standout campaign with Bologna.
