After finishing in third place in the Premier League table and appointing Michael Carrick as First Team Manager, this summer transfer window is expected to be transformative for Manchester United. Whilst still early on, so far it has been underwhelming. 

United have not completed a signing as of yet, however they have agreed a deal to sign Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Italian side Atalanta for a total package of around £40 million, including add-ons. 

Many believe at least five or six signings is essential for United, especially with Champions League matches awaiting them. Up to three midfielders is necessary given the departure of Casemiro and the likely departure of Manuel Ugarte. 

As well as this, the attack could be improved with more depth, like a left winger and/or a striker to backup Benjamin Sesko. And finally, the defence also needs reinforcements, certainly full back, if United really want to progress.

With the ageing and injury-prone Luke Shaw being United's only real left back, it feels like United will make a signing in this area this summer, and one name has been mentioned constantly. Lewis Hall. 

Lewis Hall has been linked with a potential move away from Newcastle United this summer after a disappointing 2025/26 season for the club, where they missed out on European football qualification. To make matters worse, Hall also missed out on a place in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which could frustrate the 21-year-old.

Since his move from Chelsea to Newcastle, Lewis Hall has shone for Eddie Howe's side. The Englishman has showcased his talents in the Premier League consistently and has also proved himself in the Champions League. While he is still so young, he is already experienced and has proved himself as a very good left back.

It was a shock to see him miss out on a place in England's World Cup squad after a good season. Many fans expected him to compete for a starting spot with Nico O'Reilly, but Thomas Tuchel decided to not take him, much to the shock of England fans.

There were rumours that Hall may have been frustrated by this decision, and could even have been angry with Eddie Howe, igniting rumours of a potential exit this summer. If Lewis Hall was available, it would be no shock to see the top Premier League clubs lining up to sign him, and with Manchester United needing a Luke Shaw replacement, this could be the perfect signing. 

Although the club are thought to admire Hall, it is unclear whether a move could materialise as things stand. According to BBC's Simon Stone, United's interest may not be as serious as some initially thought.

In an interview with The United Stand, Stone said "I mentioned Lewis Hall's name to someone at United, and they were thinking the interest in him may not be as forceful as we've been led to believe, but we'll see if that happens.” 

It would make a lot of sense for United to move for Hall if possible, and it would be disappointing to see them walk away from a target that many people think could be amazing for the club's future.

Luke Shaw started all 38 Premier League matches for Manchester United in the 2025/26 season, which is impressive for any player, but it is especially impressive for a player who has struggled with injuries like he has. 

Shaw joined United back in 2014 at the age of just 18 in a deal that made him the most expensive teenager in the world at the time. 12 years on, Shaw has been ever-present for United despite struggling for form at times and suffering with injuries and fitness issues, including a double leg fracture in 2015. 

Now at 30 years old, his best years are most likely behind him, despite him being a valuable member of the squad. United needs to start searching for a long-term successor, and this summer could be the perfect time to do so.

However, there have also been reports that the club could consider a new contract with lower wages for Shaw.

With the modern game demanding so much of full-backs, United need more mobility in these areas and players who can be effective both defensively and going forward.

Luke Shaw can still be very valuable to United, with his experience and good character, but if a player like Lewis Hall becomes available this summer, it is hard to see United not making a move for him. Hall could learn a lot from Shaw, and could also make a big impact on the team immediately. 

After Simon Stone's comments, a deal feels less likely than it has in recent weeks, but it will be interesting to see how the situation develops. There is no doubt that Hall would bring a lot to United, which makes United's lack of interest cocnerning.
