Luke Shaw is set to enter the final year of his Manchester United contract this summer.
Luke Shaw started all 38 Premier League matches for Manchester United last season - becoming only the fifth United player to achieve that feat in the Premier League era.
However, Shaw is set to enter the final year of his contract next season, which does not include the option to extend it by an additional season.
United are already in the market for a new left-back this summer, with Newcastle United's Lewis Hall seemingly the favourite to join the club, among the Red Devils fan base, at least.
Patrick Dorgu could also drop into left-back - a position he played against Brighton under Darren Fletcher - but his future may be as a wide player, although which side remains to be seen.
Harry Amass and Diego Leon will also be hoping for minutes in the first team. Amass impressed at Sheffield Wednesday earlier this season before picking up a hamstring injury at Norwich City, while Leon has shown glimpses of his potential for the Under-21s side.
United's Luke Shaw stance
The Sun have reported that Luke Shaw's current contract is worth £200,000 per week, and United are not expected to offer a similar salary should they choose to extend Shaw's contract before it expires next year.
The report continues to say that if United do decide to keep Shaw, it could be in a similar vein to Harry Maguire's latest contract extension.
Maguire entered the final year of his United contract last summer and was not handed a new deal until close to the end of the campaign.
The club decided to wait to see how important a player Maguire would be under Michael Carrick, and taking a similar approach for Luke Shaw would be sensible, given his injury history over the years.
Shaw joined United in June 2014 for £31 million and remains the longest-serving player in the first-team squad.
Should United keep Shaw?
Luke Shaw has already proved he can be one of the best left-backs when he is fully fit. That is not the issue.
The problem is his fitness.
While he started 38 Premier League games last season, Shaw will be asked to play in the Champions League next term, which could see him start a match in midweek and on the weekend. This could be too much for Shaw.
He has missed so many matches through injury since his move to Old Trafford, and sometimes his body simply cannot keep up with the number of games he is being asked to play.
If United can sign another left-back this summer, that could see Shaw drop to second-choice, which could help extend his career at the top and with United - potentially leading to a new deal.
