Since he became a regular on the flank under Michael Carrick, fans have questioned exactly where Patrick Dorgu's best position is.
Where is Patrick Dorgu's best position?
Manchester United's summer transfer window will largely focus on their midfield rebuild after they confirmed Michael Carrick would be the man to lead the club into the first season in the Champions League since 2023/24 under Erik ten Hag.
Roundtable have previously reported that Carrick is set to have a say in the transfer process, which could be crucial in replacing Casemiro, given Carrick's experience in central midfield.
United have already completed the signing of Éderson from Atalanta, although the deal is unlikely to be finalised until after the World Cup, after the Brazilian's late call-up to replace the injured Wesley. Michael Carrick is also known to love West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes, and United are now in club-to-club negotiations with the Hammers regarding the Portuguese playmaker.
However, United will be interested in more than just midfielders this summer, having been linked with several left-wingers and left-backs. Bradley Barcola, Illiman Ndiaye and Morgan Rogers have been mentioned as options on the left flank, while Lewis Hall and Myles Lewis-Skelly could be the first-choice left-back targets.
Whether United prioritise a left-back or a left-winger seems to remain an uncertainty, but Patrick Dorgu's future is likely to play a key factor.
Dorgu's best position
Under Rúben Amorim, Dorgu played most of his matches as a left-wing-back in a 3-4-2-1 formation, although he actually made his debut as a right-wing-back.
Towards the end of Amorim's stint in charge at Old Trafford, Dorgu advanced up the pitch and occasionally played as a left or right-winger, but most of his minutes remained at wing-back.
And then came Michael Carrick.
In his first game in charge, Carrick chose Dorgu as his starting left-winger. Not only did Dorgu score in the 2-0 win against Manchester City, but he was one of the best players on the pitch. The young Dane started against Arsenal, too, scoring that wonder goal from 30 yards out - a goal so good Dorgu wasn't quite sure how to celebrate afterwards.
A hamstring injury ruled him out for much of the rest of the season, but Dorgu returned to the starting lineup against Brighton on the final day of the campaign. He scored again.
Good defender or not, his output when playing higher up the pitch cannot be ignored, and it seems that people close to him share that sentiment.
Tyrone Marshall of the MEN has reported that some people close to the 21-year-old believe his best position is on the right wing.
How Marcus Rashford affects Dorgu's future
While Dorgu may be at his best from the right flank, it is unlikely he will see much game time there with Amad and Bryan Mbeumo as options on that wing. Young Shea Lacey will be hoping to see minutes in that position, too, after his bright cameos in the second half of last season.
Therefore, Dorgu may settle for playing on the left wing, competing with Matheus Cunha next term. However, Marcus Rashford could yet return to Old Trafford and fight for his place.
Barcelona chose not to activate their £26 million buy option to sign Rashford at the end of his 14 goals and 14 assists loan spell; instead, choosing to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United.
It has been reported that Rashford has a £40 million release clause, which could see him leave the club.
If Rashford does leave, United could still sign a left-winger, forcing Dorgu to left-back, but if he stays with the Red Devils, Dorgu's future seems even more certain.
