Manchester United eye Newcastle's midfield maestro, but a monumental price tag threatens this transfer dream.
Who is your dreamMan United midfield transfer?
After what is proving to be a sublime farewell tour, Casemiro will depart Old Trafford at the end of the season, leaving a huge hole in Manchester United's midfield department.
Whilst Michael Carrick has got the best out of Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes, reinforcements are certainly required over the summer, especially if United want to push across all four club competitions, with a place in the Champions League almost secured.
Fernandes looks set to stay despite previous interest from Saudi Arabia, and Mainoo is fresh from signing a new contract which will see him stay in the iconic red shirt until 2031.
United's midfield search has spread far and wide, with Newcastle's Sandro Tonali seeming to be the best fit, with his athletic nature, relentless playstyle and suitable age playing into his favour.
However, United have ran into a significant issue if they try to get pen to paper with the Italian, who Paul Scholes even described as "better than Declan Rice."
Romano confirms Man Utd face major Tonali transfer conundrum
With United's recent transfer strategy, the club have shown favouring towards Premier League proven profiles with the likes of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo quickly becoming hits at Old Trafford.
But this strategy comes with a heavy price tag. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed via his YouTube channel that Newcastle could demand up to £95 million for Tonali. He also confirmed that United have a concrete interest in the midfielder.
He stated: "There is interest from Manchester United. There is interest from Manchester City. So for sure, both Manchester clubs are following the Tonali situation, and for sure he's going to be one of the names of the summer to follow."
"They wait to understand how expensive the package will be for Sandro Tonali, because they believe, as they did one year ago, that it could be too expensive, but the appreciation from both Manchester clubs remains."
United may have to look elsewhere at more financially suitable options such as Aurelien Tchouameni who has been reported as a potential target for £70 million, or Mortem Hjulmand who could cost £42 million.
How many midfielders would Man Utd need?
Whilst the strategy of bringing in proven talents may guarantee more quality, United's chances across all four competitions next season is heavily reliant on squad depth.
Cheaper profiles from outside of the Premier League may be more financially suitable for United to then bring in a higher number of players, allowing for more rotational freedom across games.
Reinforcements across all three profiles in the midfield would provide the necessary cover in the event of injuries, which have proven to sting many tams this season, such as Tottenham, who find themselves in a relegation battle.
For now, Michael Carrick's side keep their heads facing Arne Slot's Liverpool, who make the trip to Old Trafford on Sunday as the Red Devils look to do the double over the team from Merseyside and put their Champions League hopes on hold.
