Manchester United look set to sell Marcus Rashford this summer, despite Barcelona not activating his £26 million buy option.

Should Manchester United sign a new left-winger this summer? More Videos

Manchester United's focus this summer is quite clearly on rebuilding their midfield after Casemiro left the club before the final Premier League match of the season against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Manuel Ugarte looks destined to follow Casemiro out of Old Trafford after struggling for game time during Michael Carrick's short tenure at the club. Perhaps Ugarte would have tried to stay if Carrick had not been appointed as the permanent head coach.

Atalanta midfielder Éderson looks set to replace one of the two outgoing midfielders after agreeing a deal to join Manchester United for just under £40 million. While he has not been officially announced just yet, the Brazilian could be one of three new central midfielders to move to Old Trafford this summer.

To fund more transfers, United may be forced to sell some of their first-team players. One of the players who looks destined to leave is Marcus Rashford.

How Liverpool could force Rashford transfer

No, Rashford is not signing for Liverpool. But Liverpool could play a key role in how his future pans out, as all signs point towards the England international leaving Old Trafford this summer.

Barcelona chose not to pay the £26 million buy option in Rashford's loan contract, instead signing Anthony Gordon for almost three times the price. As it stands, Rashford will return for Michael Carrick's pre-season campaign once the World Cup is finished. But that seems unlikely.

Bayern Munich have been heavily linked with Marcus Rashford this summer, but they have also been eyeing Liverpool's Rio Ngumoha, who joined the England squad for pre-World Cup warm-up matches.

Despite interest from Germany, Liverpool reportedly remain adament that Ngumoha will remain with the club next season, which could force Munich to pivot to Rashford.

A fee has not been determined for Rashford's sale, although United are unlikely to demand too much, given the £26 million buy option they accepted for Barcelona's season-long loan.

Do United need a left-winger without Rashford?

While he did not play for the club last season, Rashford could have returned to Old Trafford ahead of next term and added an important dynamic on the left flank.

Matheus Cunha is not a natural wide player, so having Rashford could have given Michael Carrick more options on the left-hand side, but it seems Carrick is happy with his current options.

With Cunha at the World Cup, Dorgu will likely start as the left-winger during pre-season, which will allow Carrick to make another assessment before the season begins.
