"The Focus Is On..." Man Utd Journalist Reveals Summer Transfer Focus

While the transfer window has not officially opened just yet, Manchester United have already kicked off their summer with the signing of Éderson from Atalanta. The deal is yet to be officially announced, but it is widely understood that the Brazilian will move to Old Trafford for just under £40 million. 

Mateus Fernandes could be the next through the door at United, given that Roundtable understands that the two sides have entered club-to-club talks. 

It has been reported that United will look to sign at least two central midfielders this summer, so Éderson and Fernandes could yet be joined by another player - perhaps a more defensive, high-profile midfielder. 

As for the outgoings, Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho have left the club upon the expiry of their contracts. Marcus Rashford remains at the club after Barcelona chose not to activate their £26 million buy option. The England international still seems likely to leave the club, though, with interest from Chelsea and Bayern Munich. 

As it stands, it seems United are prioritising their midfield rebuild over anything else, but who else could they sign this summer? 

The big question this summer - apart from the obvious: Who will replace Casemiro - is: Left-winger or left-back? And the answer depends on Patrick Dorgu's future at the club - whether he will play in defence or continue to play further forward. 

Tyrone Marshall of the MEN has reported that a left-back seems to be the focus for United, as it stands. However, there is interest in left-wingers at United. 

"At the moment, the focus is on a left-back rather than a left-winger," he said. "United like Lewis Hall, and a deal could be done, with the ideal aim being to find a long-term successor to Shaw.

"Patrick Dorgu is being considered more of a winger at the moment, and I think that means it's unlikely a left-winger will join.

"There is interest in Morgan Rogers and Iliman Ndiaye, but the deal would have to work financially, and it isn't a priority."

Lewis Hall's absence from the World Cup could make a deal easier with Newcastle United, although they are unlikely to be willing to sell Hall for a low fee. 

Signing Hall could force Luke Shaw to return to the backup left-back role, but that may be the best for his fitness, despite him starting all 38 Premier League matches last season. 

While Patrick Dorgu was out injured, Matheus Cunha made the left wing position his own under Michael Carrick, despite struggling to adapt to the role in early matches. 

Dorgu returned to the starting lineup in the final game of the season against Brighton and Hove Albion and scored another goal. The young Dane has seriously impressed from the start since Carrick replaced Rúben Amorim. 

However, due to his defensive upbringing, Dorgu may be chosen to play as a left-back in some matches - even if a new defender is brought in. Carrick may choose to drop Dorgu back in games where United expect to dominate the ball; therefore, adding another body to the attack. 

Not only would Cunha start in those matches, but he could remain in the team for games against bigger sides, due to his counterattacking threat. 

Neither Cunha nor Dorgu should be concerned about game time next season. They will both play plenty of games on the left wing.
