Manchester United appear interested in signing a young wide player this summer after missing out on Antoine Semenyo in the January transfer window.
Manchester United will not have decided on their summer transfer plans just yet, which could be considered a concern to some fans, but it is impossible to come to a complete agreement before a new head coach is appointed.
However, the days of signing players just for a manager appear to be over at Old Trafford. Since Jason Wilcox took over from Dan Ashworth as Director of Football, the first-team signings have been largely focused on the Manchester United philosophy, rather than the system of the head coach, with the exception of Patrick Dorgu.
This summer, that trend is unlikely to change, so Wilcox will already be eyeing players who he believes could make an impact on the current squad, no matter who is in the dugout next season.
Antoine Semenyo was a key target for United in January, although he would have to play as a left-wing-back for Rúben Amorim. In the end, he chose blue over red, leaving United without any natural left-wingers for the change to the back four under Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick.
Since the formation change, United have continued to be linked with left-sided attackers, despite the good form of Matheus Cunha on that side. Patrick Dorgu also impressed in that position before his hamstring injury against Arsenal in Michael Carrick's second game.
United scouts "blown away" by Cardozo
Top of United's left-wing list appears to be RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande, but Fabrizio Romano has now said that the German side will try to keep him at the club this summer by offering a new deal, while other clubs are also interested.
After that blow, it seems United may have turned their attentions to Bayern Munich's wonderkid Maycon Cardozo, who was given his first-team debut last month by Vincent Kompany.
The Brazilian-born wide player joined Bayern in 2024 and has recently signed a new contract to remain in Munich, but TeamTALK have reported that United's scouts have been "blown away" by his talents.
United see Cardozo as one of "Europe's most exciting emerging attackers" and looks set to continue monitoring him as his senior career develops.
Will Cardozo be a sensible signing for United?
Signing young attackers will always be exciting, especially at a club like Manchester United, who have such a successful history with it, but that does not mean they should be signed at every opportunity.
Maycon Cardozo appears to be a very talented footballer, but United already have several talented wide players at the club, including Amad, Matheus Cunha, Patrick Dorgu and Bryan Mbeumo.
In the academy, Noah Ajayi and JJ Gabriel have played crucial roles in Darren Fletcher's push for the FA Youth Cup, with Kai Rooney and Junior Brown often making a difference from the bench, too. The under-21s side is also blessed with wide talent, with Shea Lacey and James Scanlon.
Cardozo could cost United upwards of £10 million thanks to his Bayern Munich contract, so United may be forced to look elsewhere instead of spending so much money on what is a rather unproven youngster.
