Manchester United are already becoming active in the summer transfer window and have already closed in on their first signing of the summer.

Reports on Tuesday evening confirmed that the club had struck an agreement with Atalanta for the signing of Brazilian midfielder Ederson, who will join the club in early July for an initial fee of around £35 million, plus a further £4 million in bonuses.

Although the agreement has been struck, the transfer will not be confirmed until early July due to the need for the player to undergo his medical and for his work permit to be secured.

With Casemiro set to depart and Manuel Ugarte likely leaving too, United are hoping to sign up to three new midfielders this summer.

Højlund signs for Napoli

Last summer, United secured the services of highly-rated young striker Benjamin Šeško, who has become the club's new first-choice striker. In doing so, they allowed No. 9 Rasmus Højlund to leave on loan to Napoli.

Although it was only an initial loan move for the Dane, a clause was instered stating that if Napoli were to qualify for the Champions League, they were obliged to sign him permenantly for a £38 million fee.

On Wednesday morning, both Napoli and those at Old Trafford confirmed that the clause had been activated and that Højlund was now a permanent fixture in Naples.

The 23-year-old featured 95 times across two seasons for the Reds, scoring 26 goals and providing six assists in that time.

What's next for United?

Following the signing of Edreson and the sale of Højlund, Roundtable understands that the club will now turn their focus to West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

United already believe that the Portuguese international has given his priority to United over other suitors such as Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, although reports suggest that the Hammers would demand as much as £80 million for him.

Roundtable understands that the club are planning to hold further talks with the East London side surrounding the 21-year-old, and has been in contact with his representatives for a sustained period.

Fernandes sees a move to Old Trafford as a dream fo rhis career, although agreement on a final fee will be the ultimate stumbling block with any negotiaotns.

The club have also been linked to Brighton's Carlos Baleba and Bournemouth's Alex Scott, while Nottingham Forest start Elliot Anderson remains the club's top target, with interest from Manchester City complicating matters.
