Manchester United are following several midfielders as the club looks to revamp its midfield this summer following Casemiro's departure. 

United have already agreed a deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta, and are now ramping up their pursuit of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

While Fernandes is United's top target, a deal is far from certain due to the Hammers' asking price and competition from Tottenham Hotspur.

United are therefore continuing to monitor the situation of numerous midfielders. United have Aurélien Tchouaméni high on their shortlist, but his wage demands could be an issue, and Real Madrid are yet to communicate any willingness to sell him.

United also have Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott on their list of targets should a move for Fernandes fall through, but the Cherries are said to be adamant that the English midfielder is not for sale. They are currently in negotiations over a new contract with the 22-year-old. 

Sandro Tonali, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton are also on United's radar, although none of those moves is currently advanced, while rumours surrounding Felix Nmecha seem to be gaining momentum.

Another name that United are said to be considering as they look to rebuild their midfield is Bruno Guimarães.

According to CaughtOffside, Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Inter are all closely monitoring the situation of the Brazilian international. 

However, any club that wants to sign Guimarães will have to trigger his £100m release clause. The clause was inserted into his contract in 2024, and Newcastle will not entertain any offers below that fee.

The report claims that Arsenal’s pursuit appears to be the most serious as things stand. 

The Gunners had an opening proposal for Guimarães worth a reported £55 million rejected by Newcastle, but various reports claim that the north-London club are expected to return with an improved offer.

While Guimarães is undoubtedly one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, he is not the type of signing that United should be making.

Purely from a footballing point of view, he would dramatically improve United. However, he will turn 29-years-old in November and given that he would cost £100m, it would not be a wise financial investment.

For Arsenal, it makes sense. They have just won the Premier League and have a team that can compete on all fronts now. Adding a player of Guimarães' quality will only improve their chances of sustaining success.

However, for United, a team that is still building and not quite at the level yet where they can win major honours, it would not make sense. United need to ideally target players who are 26-years-old or younger.

That is not to say that United shouldn't sign players who are older, but it would have to be at an affordable price.
