Manchester United are expected to be very busy in the transfer window this summer, with midfield the club's priority following the departure of Casemiro.

United have already agreed a deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta, with an official announcement expected in the coming weeks.

The club are also in active talks to sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United. The midfielder has attracted interest from Arsenal, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, but is said to be keen on a move to Old Trafford. West Ham's £80 million asking price is expected to be a stumbling block, though.

Fulham's Sander Berge is another player United have considered, and the Reds could pursue a move for the Norwegian should Manuel Ugarte leave. Carlos Baleba is another player United retain an interest in having attempted to sign the Cameroon international last summer.

Martin Baturina is the latest midfielder to be linked to United after the Croatia international scored against England in their first group stage game of the 2026 World Cup. 

According to Sky Italia, Baturina has attracted interest from Aston Villa and United, while German champions Bayern Munich have also enquired about him.

The report claims that Como has already turned down an offer of £43.3 million for Baturina, although it does not name the club which made that offer. 

Despite interest from Munich, various reports claim that the Premier League is Baturina's most likely destination should he leave Como this summer.

Baturina registered eight goals and four assists last season in all competitions, which represents a fairly good debut season in Italy. Before that, he was a prominent figure at Dinamo Zagreb for multiple seasons after making his first-team debut in the 2021/22 season.

While he is undoubtedly a fine footballer, he is not what United currently need, and would not be a wise signing, especially given how much Como would likely demand.

Baturina is more of an advanced midfielder, but United have enough options to play in the no.10 role. Bruno Fernandes will start almost every game anyway, while Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount can both fill in very well in that position should Fernandes ever be unavailable.

United's focus this summer should be on strengthening the deeper midfield roles. The signing of Ederson will provide Michael Carrick with an elite athlete in the middle of the park, while Mateus Fernandes is an outstanding technician who would add a lot of quality to Carrick's side on the ball.

Should Ugarte leave, Berge would be a brilliant replacement, as the Fulham midfielder would provide Carrick with a midfield profile he doesn't currently have.
