Man Utd's "Clear Position" On Amad As Italian Interest Emerges

Manchester United's transfer window has begun to stall since the deal to sign Éderson from Atalanta was agreed. The Brazilian looked set to join the club, but a late call-up to the Brazil national side has delayed the formalities until after the World Cup. 

Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United looked set to follow Éderson to Old Trafford, but interest from Tottenham Hotspur has slowed the move down. And with West Ham playing Championship football next season, a bidding war for Fernandes could be on the cards. 

Fernandes is not the only Irons player United are interested in this summer, with links to Crysencio Summerville only increasing after his impressive performances for the Netherlands. 

However, after Manuel Ugarte suffered an ACL injury for Uruguay - which could see him out of action for close to 12 months - United may have to offload some first-team players this summer. Ugarte looked set to leave Old Trafford and bring in some money, which could have been added to the midfield transfer budget, but the injury will likely see him stay until he gets back to full fitness. 

Director of Football Jason Wilcox - alongside Michael Carrick, as he has a say in transfers this summer - could be forced to make several tough decisions, including one on Ivory Coast international Amad. 

Last season was a difficult one for Amad. He started the campaign well, playing just behind Bryan Mbeumo as a right-wing-back, and then left for AFCON. When he returned, Rúben Amorim was gone, and Michael Carrick had changed the formation to a 4-2-3-1.

Many would see this as a good sign for Amad, as he would be given the opportunity to return to his natural position, rather than playing in defence. But in reality, it was a real setback. Amad now has to re-adapt to playing more advanced, having spent so long changing his game to play at wing-back. 

The final game of the season - against Brighton and Hove Albion - was his best for quite some time, and he has started the World Cup in fine form. 

Now, Fabrizio Romano has reported that despite interest from Italy, United do not want to sell Amad this summer. 

On his YouTube channel, he said: "Manchester United’s position is very clear. Amad Diallo is not for sale this summer.

"Michael Carrick has made his decision known to the club, and Manchester United fully expect Amad Diallo to remain part of their plans for the new season.

"So if you continue to see speculation linking Amad Diallo with Milan or other clubs, Manchester United’s stance has not changed. They want him to stay at the club."

While his struggles last term can be explained, that does not mean Amad's poor performances will be acceptable for another season. 

Last summer, Jason Wilcox implemented a two-year rule. In simple terms, if you had two poor years at Old Trafford, you would be moved out of the door. That explains why Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Andre Onana, and Jadon Sancho all left the club. 

Last season was a poor one for Amad. Two goals and three assists in 32 Premier League appearances are not good enough from a player of his calibre, especially when in 2024/25, Amad registered eight goals and six assists in just 26 Premier League appearances - a lot of which came at wing-back. 

He needs to improve, or he will risk a season as second-fiddle to Bryan Mbeumo.
