According to recent reports, Manchester United are preparing a move for a key Wolverhampton Wanderers player in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Although there is still months until the summer transfer window officially opens, there is much excitement around what sort of business Manchester United will do.

There is expectation of a clear out. The club are reportedly trying to sell both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, whilst Marcus Rashford’s permanent transfer to Barcelona feels a matter of if rather than when.

This then allows United to bring in the players they want, particularly if UEFA Champions League football is secured, which currently looks a lot more likely than not.

One player that the club could look to bring in is Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes. Indeed, as according to TEAMtalk, both United and Liverpool are “closely monitoring” the midfielder, with “detailed checks” being carried out ahead of a potential move.

Although Wolves' relegation is a formality, Gomes has been in good form of late, and has, in the most part, been a very good player ever since signing from boyhood club Flamengo back in the winter of 2023.

In terms of profile, the Brazilian is a very hard working midfielder, very capable of winning the ball back. In the Premier League this season, he ranks 5th in the league for tackles per game, with 2.9. Last season, he ranked in 4th place, with 3.2 per game.

Back in the 23/24 season, Gomes made 3.8 tackles per game, which was second only to then Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha. So, he has consistently been one of the very best ball winners in the league since he signed.

Now, it's always important to add context. In those seasons, Wolves have averaged 48.9%, 48.1%, and 43.2% possession. So, they've always averaged less of the ball than their opponents, meaning more opportunities to make tackles.

However, he has still been able to produce better numbers than nearly every player playing for other teams that average sub 50% possession. So, it is still very impressive regardless.

The thing with Gomes is, he is not just a ball winner either. He is very good in possession too. On his Wolves debut back in 2023, he scored a wonderful finesse shot to give them a win over Southampton, despite having ten men.

Last time out, the midfielder put in a wonderful cross to the back post to allow Rob Edwards' side to equalise and pull off an impressive point away to Brentford from 2-0 down.

With Wolves almost certainly in the Championship next season, United should be able to get the Brazil international at a fairly reasonable price. It would certainly be an interesting addition, let's see.
