Galatasaray targets struggling Manchester United midfielder. Premier League clubs also circle as Ugarte seeks a fresh start after a disappointing Old Trafford spell.

Midfield Has To Be The Priority This Summer

Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte has struggled to meet expectations since joining Manchester United in 2024. The 24-year-old made the move following a brief stint at Paris Saint-Germain, becoming one of the first signings of the INEOS era alongside Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt.

However, his time at the club soon took a downturn. Ugarte faced growing criticism, which ultimately led to reduced playing time and saw him edged out of the squad by fellow South American Casemiro.

Despite failing to live up to expectations under Erik ten Hag, when Rúben Amorim was confirmed as the next head coach in November 2024, many believed that reuniting with the head coach with whom he had enjoyed so much success at Sporting Lisbon would lead to an upturn in form, but that didn't turn out to be the case.

Despite featuring frequently for the rest of the 2024/25 campaign, this season he has featured much less often, being reduced to minutes coming off the bench in the dying embers of games, leading to speculation about the Uruguayan's future at the club.

Galatasaray pushing to make a move for Ugarte

During the January transfer window, many were expecting that Ugarte would be moved on, owing to a distinct lack of game time. Perhaps Amorim's sacking at the beginning of the window put all the club's plans into disarray, and maybe Ugarte thought that he would be afforded more minutes under the next head coach.

As reported by TEAMtalk, however, Galatasaray are pushing hard to secure the signing of the 24-year-old midfielder after almost getting a deal over the line in January.

The outlet reports that despite being highly rated by Michael Carrick, the midfielder is seriously considering his future at the club, with Carrick's preferred midfield pairing of Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo being clear.

As Manchester United look to raise as much funds as possible to help secure a marquee midfield signing, Ugarte could find himself on the chopping block after a disappointing two-year spell at Old Trafford

Interest from multiple clubs

Despite Ugarte not performing up to the standards he was in his time at Sporting, the 24-year-old is attracting interest from across Europe.

While TEAMtalk reports that a move to Turkey is currently seen as the most likely destination for Ugarte, Serie A giants Juventus have expressed interest in bringing the midfielder in in the summer after shifting their attention from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg to Ugarte.

The Uruguayan also isn't short of suitors within the Premier League itself, with Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Tottenham all reportedly remaining informed on the Uruguayan's situation at the club.

The Newcastle links are interesting, and Ugarte could be used to sweeten a potential deal should Sandro Tonali, who has expressed his openness to move away from St James' Park, move to Old Trafford in the summer.
