Why Morgan Gibbs-White is full value for his first England call-up in almost a year.
Morgan Gibbs-White has been called up to the England squad for the first time since October 2025.
The Nottingham Forest midfielder was not initially selected in Thomas Tuchel's squad for the upcoming break, but after Chelsea's Cole Palmer withdrew due to load management, the 26-year-old was first in line to take his place.
It follows another wave of shock and annoyance when Gibbs-White was initially omitted from the squad, with the eventual decision, however forced it may have been, set to appease England fans of all clubs, not just those of a Forest persuasion.
Although Gibbs-White may be the beneficiary of some good fortune that Palmer had to withdraw, his call-up is anything but lucky. In fact, it is one of the most deserved in the entire squad.
The form player of 2026
Forest fans often rave about Gibbs-White, and with good reason, and there is no surprise that clubs like Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are so often mentioned in the same breath as the attacking midfielder.
No player has scored more Premier League goals in 2026 than Gibbs-White, with only Erling Haaland equalling his tally of 13 for the calendar year to date.
It means that, barring Harry Kane, Gibbs-White is the most in-form forward in England's squad, making his initial snub all the more baffling.
A chance to make a statement
When Gibbs-White was initially excluded from the squad, Three Lions boss Tuchel gave his reasoning for opting for Palmer instead.
Bizarrely, he insinuated that Palmer needed to up his level to reach that of Gibbs-White, to justify his place in the squad and earn it for future camps.
“It makes no sense to nominate three, four or five number 10s, it just does not help anyone," he insisted, "We can see the form that Morgan [Gibbs-White] is in.
"And he ended the season very, very strongly and was the key player for Forest to not be relegated. And we can see him stepping up now.”
“It is one thing to be nominated, by the way,” he continued, “Like with Cole [Palmer], and getting your ticket back in the squad, but it’s another thing to perform for England, and this also counts.
“So especially, Cole needs to step up when he comes and needs to show these kind of numbers and these kind of performances to get his place and keep his shirt and to justify the nomination.”
The idea that a player would be called up in hope that they might reach the level of a player who was snubbed felt bemusing to say the least.
But, alas, it is Gibbs-White who will be in the squad, and that gives him a huge opportunity, especially in light of Tuchel's comments, to cement his place for camps to come.
As he has found in his efforts to break back into the England squad, dislodging incumbent players is a tough task, especially when coupled with good club form.
Gibbs-White already boasts the latter in abundance, so if he can replicate that form for the national team, he will be simply undroppable.
Who he could face
England have four games throughout this extended three-week international break, giving Gibbs-White plenty of opportunities for minutes.
The Three Lions will compete in four UEFA Nations League ties; hosting Spain and Czechia either side of trips to Czechia and Croatia.
Such a hectic schedule may not be ideal from a Forest perspective, with the club likely somewhat thankful when they initially thought Gibbs-White would have a prolonged rest period, but for the player, more games simply means more opportunity.
