Thomas Tuchel has explained the reason behind his Morgan Gibbs-White snub... again.
Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White has once again been snubbed from Thomas Tuchel's latest England squad.
On Friday morning, Thomas Tuchel named his first England squad since the World Cup, but there was still no place for Morgan Gibbs-White.
At this point, the decision was not shocking, even if it is indefensible. Tuchel has consistently overlooked the 26-year-old, and there was no indication that would change here.
Gibbs-White’s qualifying credentials speak for themselves.
He is the most in-form Premier League player in 2026, having amassed more goals (13) than even Erling Haaland (12).
Achieving the majority of those goals, as well as three assists, at a time when Forest were underperforming and battling relegation until the final few games of last season only adds to his personal CV.
But it was not enough to convince Tuchel, who instead opted for Jude Bellingham, as expected, as well as offering a recall to Cole Palmer, who also missed the World Cup.
Eberechi Eze, who can also play on the wing, was also selected, despite playing just 68 minutes in the Premier League so far for Arsenal this season.
Explaining his decision to omit Gibbs-White again, Tuchel indicated that it was a numbers issue, and insisted calling players up for the sake of it does not make sense.
“It makes no sense to nominate three, four or five number 10s, it just does not help anyone.
“We can see the form that Morgan [Gibbs-White] is in,” the German admitted, “And he ended the season very, very strongly and was the key player for Forest to not be relegated. And we can see him stepping up now.”
The former Chelsea boss did, however, indicated that it was a close call between Gibbs-White and Palmer, insisting that the current Blues forward needs to step up if he wants to keep his place.
“It is one thing to be nominated, by the way,” he said, “Like with Cole [Palmer], and getting your ticket back in the squad, but it’s another thing to perform for England, and this also counts.
“So especially, Cole needs to step up when he comes and needs to show these kind of numbers and these kind of performances to get his place and keep his shirt and to justify the nomination.”
