Eliezer Mayenda has completed a £22m move from Sunderland to Stade Rennais in Ligue 1.
Eliezer Mayenda, affectionately known as the 'Big Man' by Sunderland supporters, has officially completed a £22m move to French top flight outfit Stade Rennais to call time on an emotional three-year stay at the Stadium of Light.
Mayenda arrived in the summer of 2023, and despite a lacklustre opening year on Wearside, established himself as a firm fan-favourite for his crucial role in Sunderland's Premier League promotion-winning campaign in 2024/25.
In Regis Le Bris' first season as Sunderland boss, Mayenda showed the second tier of English football his dazzling qualities in attack, netting ten goals and registering five assists to spearhead the Black Cats back to England's elite.
After an impressive first full season in the red-and-white stripes, Mayenda continued his efforts in the play-off campaign, with two goals that helped shape the history of Sunderland forever.
His winner against Coventry City in the first leg of the semi-final set Sunderland on course for Wembley, and in the final against Sheffield United, Mayenda fired the equaliser home in front of 35,000 Black Cats supporters before Tommy Watson curled in the dramatic injury-time winner.
In credit to Mayenda, he showcased his Premier League credentials last season - but just not on a consistent enough basis, kicking off Sunderland's return to top flight football with a deft header against West Ham United on opening day.
His ample attacking qualities, superb attitude, and penchant for delivering in monumental moments were two of his many traits that the Rennes hierarchy were attracted to.

After his move was officially announced, Rennes Sporting Director Loic Desire told the club's media of Mayenda: "We were looking for a fast player capable of stretching the defense; Eliezer can play both out wide and through the middle.
"He is a young player, yet he has already experienced several leagues and different countries.
"We know his potential; he will settle into the squad, and I have no doubts about him. His mentality is exemplary. We’ve received excellent feedback regarding his attitude, which is just as important as what he’ll show on the pitch."
In addition to Desire, Rennes CEO Arnaud Pouille added: "There was real competition for Eliezer, and he showed unwavering determination to join us.
"We are proud to see him sign with Stade Rennais today. We are delighted to welcome him and his family to the Rouge et Noir family. I wish him a smooth transition into the dressing room, where he can bring all his qualities to the team."
Following Mayenda's emotional message to the Sunderland fanbase on Instagram, he has now addressed the move from a Rennes perspective, outlining that he "can't wait" to play for the French giants.
"I am very happy to join Stade Rennais, a big club that was often talked about back at Sochaux.", Mayenda said.
"I’d describe myself as a complete forward who likes to run in behind, dribble, and take on defenders.
"I can’t wait to play at Roazhon Park, team up with my new teammates, and discover Ligue 1, an underrated league."
Ironically, Mayenda will not have to wait long to reunite with his Black Cats teammates and the fanbase, with Sunderland set to host Rennes in a pre-season friendly on the 15th of August, during which the 'Big Man' chant will certainly be chorusing around the Stadium of Light.
