Sunderland have completed the signing of defensive midfielder Jules Ahoka from Royal Antwerp for £8.6m.
Sunderland have formally announced the signing of defensive-minded midfielder Jules Ahoka, who the club have been “following closely”, from Belgian Pro League side Royal Antwerp with an £8.6m package signed.
Days earlier in the summer transfer window, reports emerged that Sunderland were poised to sign Ahoka after his impressive breakout summer for DR Congo’s youth team at the 2026 Toulon Tournament and his outstanding start to the season at Antwerp.
Ahoka arrived at Antwerp last year from AC Normands, and has made four senior appearances for the Belgian giants, with two eye-catching performances to start this season before sealing his move to Sunderland.
From a Sunderland perspective, the signing of 20-year-old prospect Ahoka is both an exciting signing with a view to his long-term potential for development and an important addition to Regis Le Bris’ squad for the immediate future.
Ahoka is seen as the understudy to Granit Xhaka at Sunderland, and the new £8.6m addition will offer crucial cover and back-up to the Swiss veteran, who is set to turn 34-years-of-age next month.
Upon his announcement, Sunderland Director of Football Florent Ghisolfi explained why the Black Cats were keen to sign Ahoka and outlined the qualities that the young midfielder will bring to Le Bris’ squad.
Florent Ghisolfi Offers Jules Ahoka Sunderland Insight
On Ahoka’s arrival, Ghisolfi told Sunderland’s media: "Jules is a player we have been following closely and he has shown some very encouraging qualities for his age.
“His performances at the Toulon Tournament demonstrated his physicality, defensive qualities and mentality, while he has also gained valuable experience in Belgium.
“He has huge potential, and we believe Sunderland is the right environment for him to continue his development.
“We are delighted to welcome him to the Club and look forward to supporting him as he takes the next steps in his career.”
As well as Ghisolfi, Ahoka himself was understandably delighted to join the Stadium of Light project, with the midfielder becoming Sunderland’s third signing of the summer following the signings of Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie.
Jules Ahoka Reacts To Sunderland Move
Ahoka, who will don the number 29 shirt for Sunderland, added that he “will give everything” in the red-and-white stripes.
Ahoka said: “I am very happy and proud to join Sunderland,
“It is a big Club with great ambitions, and I am excited to be here.
“I want to work hard, learn from my team-mates and the staff, and continue developing as a player.
“I will give everything for the Club and I cannot wait to get started.”
As a result of his lack of senior football experience, especially given the level of talent in the Premier League, it remains to be seen when Le Bris will bed the young prospect into first-team contention for Sunderland.
Regardless, the £8.6m starlet is certainly an extremely exciting addition who comes to Wearside with vast potential, and the player himself could not ask for a better footballing role model than Sunderland figurehead Xhaka.
