Sunderland Director of Football Florent Ghisolfi has explained how the Black Cats’ transfer team will be operating this summer.
The Stadium of Light hierarchy are facing arguably the most important summer transfer window to date at Sunderland, given the gravitas of the upcoming campaign.
Last season, the Black Cats ended on the highest of highs, finishing seventh in the Premier League table and subsequently qualifying for the Europa League under Regis Le Bris.
As a result, the increased fixture demands, higher quality of opponents and competition with other clubs has placed even more importance on the club’s summer transfer window business.
Upon promotion back to the Premier League last summer, the Sunderland transfer team led by Director of Football Florent Ghisolfi, added both quality and quantity to Le Bris’ newly-promoted squad, which was evidenced by their incredible finish.
For Ghisolfi and co, their strategy in the current summer transfer window will be slightly different, with the Black Cats chief lifting the lid on what Sunderland’s strategy will aim to be within the market.
Florent Ghisolfi Explains Sunderland Transfer Strategy
Qualification for the Europa League means that Sunderland will have at least eight more games in the coming campaign’s calendar in comparison to last season, but the importance of the window runs even deeper.
Last summer, Sunderland needed to add both quality and quantity to Le Bris’ squad to have any hopes of surviving an instant relegation back to the Championship.
Evidently, the Black Cats hierarchy outdid themselves last year, bringing the likes of marquee additions in Granit Xhaka and Brian Brobbey, but also padding the Sunderland ranks out with Premier League level talent.
In this window, Sunderland will be targeting players ready to impact first-team contention, with the Black Cats already linked with players akin to Khephren Thuram of Juventus, but those rumours have subsequently been dismissed.
With the spine of Sunderland’s squad in a healthy place, Ghisolfi has explained that the focus will be on “more quality”, which will excite the Stadium of Light faithful considering the already established depths of talent in the red-and-white ranks.
Amid the 2026 World Cup and ongoing summer transfer window, as quoted by the Sunderland Echo, Sunderland director Ghisolfi explained: “I believe in the stability season after season,
“My example is more Athletic Bilbao, where they don't have the choice and they have stability. Some clubs can change 15 players a year, we don't want that.
"Of course last summer we needed this refreshment, I have to say. But for this summer I prefer stability, I prefer to work on the team and the players we have.
“We are finding connection and this is the most important thing.
“I'm not sure we need more quantity, we need more quality. The only thing I'm sure, if someone is coming in the team, because we have this cohesion, it needs to be a fit with the Sunderland values. I like to think that last summer was a rush, was a sprint. For me this one is a marathon, more precise."
Sunderland needed to bring quality to Wearside last summer, considering the worrying trend of newly-promoted sides suffering an instant demotion back down to the second tier, but Ghisolfi et al’s excellent recruitment last summer helped Le Bris and his Black Cats break that mould.
In the upcoming campaign, the dreaded ‘second season syndrome’ could condemn Sunderland to a troubled year, especially with the increased demands associated with European qualification.
Thankfully for the Sunderland faithful, the club’s hierarchy proved last summer that they are extremely slick operators in the transfer market, and nobody of a red-and-white persuasion would back against Ghisolfi and his transfer team enjoying a repeat of that outstanding business once again this time around.
