Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey netted twice for the Netherlands in their 5-1 World Cup win over Sweden.
Brian Brobbey has continued his impressive form from Sunderland’s successful season into the 2026 World Cup by getting off the mark for the Netherlands.
Ronaldo Koeman’s side ran out 5-1 winners over Sweden on Saturday evening, courtesy of a 17-minute brace from Brobbey, and further strikes from Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo and West Ham star Crysencio Summerville.
Newcastle United flop Anthony Elanga scored a consolation goal for Graham Potter’s side prior to Summerville netting the Dutch’s fifth of the clash, but by then the damage had been done, with Brobbey in fearsome form.
With just five minutes on the clock, Brobbey broke the deadlock after gathering the ball from his goalkeeper’s kick and pinning the Sweden centre-half, before bursting in behind to dispatch a low cross from Gakpo to see the 24-year-old net his first ever World Cup goal.
Just 12 minutes later, Brobbey doubled the Dutch’s advantage after flicking on Denzel Dumfries’ cross past the Sweden goalkeeper, which became the fastest-ever brace by a Netherlands player in a World Cup tournament.
Netherlands boss Koeman withdrew Brobbey in the second-half after the bullish frontman’s dynamic display, and after the commanding win which saw his side reach the summit of Group F prior to Japan’s 4-0 win over Tunisia on Sunday, he heaped praise on the Sunderland star for his upturn in form since his switch from Ajax to the Stadium of Light.
Ronald Koeman Hails Brian Brobbey For Fitness Improvement
Ending an eight-year association with Eredivisie giants Ajax, Brobbey joined the Black Cats project last summer for a fee in the region of £20m, and the Dutchman has quickly cemented himself as a fan-favourite on Wearside after ending his debut campaign in the red-and-white stripes as Sunderland’s top goalscorer.
His bullish, back-to-goal, and bruising style of play proved to be an immensely difficult challenge for Premier League defences to contend without the campaign, which similarly proved to be as effective on the world stage for Sweden.
In the Dutch World Cup curtain-raiser against Japan last Sunday, Brobbey was introduced as a late substitute, but was given the nod by Koeman from kick-off on Saturday evening, and his decision proved to be pivotal in securing the three points.
Evidently, the Netherlands boss was impressed by Brobbey’s performance and brace and heaped praise on the Sunderland striker for his improvement in fitness on his move to the Black Cats, which he believes is the catalyst behind his outstanding form this season.
As quoted by ESPN, Koeman said of Brobbey: “That's his overall fitness. His sharpness, also in training. It may be a bit later for some than for others.
“But the step he took… If he hadn't taken that step, he wouldn't have played there. He didn't play for Ajax, but he just played. I think that made him think, I have to play because they're asking me to.
“He's very strong, but he wasn't top-fit. He's top-fit now. That's a big difference, because that's the basis of performance. If you're top-fit, and if you're not, you don't count in this world.”
Not only did Sunderland ace Brobbey announce himself on the world stage, he made Dutch football history by netting the Netherlands’ 100th World Cup, the eighth country ever to reach that milestone.
Buoyed by his outstanding performance, the Black Cats frontman will be hoping to continue his goalscoring prowess in the Dutch’s final group game against Tunisia on Friday as they seek to finish as winners of Group F.
To score a 17-minute brace on your World Cup debut is a truly commendable achievement, but one the Sunderland faithful would not have put past Brobbey as the physical frontman’s form continues to go from strength to strength.
