Sunderland winger Nilson Angulo enjoyed an exciting performance in the 0-0 draw against Leeds United on Sunday.

Sunderland winger Nilson Angulo enjoyed arguably his best performance for the club since signing in January 2025 in Sunday's goalless draw against Leeds United, in a long-awaited, exciting and hope-instilling outing from the young winger.

In the mid-season window of last term, Sunderland signed Ecuadorian winger Angulo from Belgian giants Anderlecht in a £17.5m deal on a long-term deal, and the young talent has been a confusing figure so far at the Stadium of Light.

Throughout the early stages of his Sunderland career, Angulo showed flashes of innate technical brilliance and potential, but also could be a cause of frustration for the Black Cats faithful, with the winger sometimes ineffective and playing within himself rather than expressing his clear talent.

However, after a pivotal World Cup campaign for Ecuador, in which the Sunderland starlet netted a stunner against Germany, the winger seems to have turned a corner within his red-and-white career this season.

Earlier in the campaign, before Sunderland's dip in form, the 23-year-old scored a stunning free-kick at Ipswich Town to open the Black Cats' account for the campaign, and Angulo followed that up with an exciting performance in the 1-1 draw at Brentford, showing several moments of sheer technique.

However, in Sunderland's 0-0 draw against Leeds on Sunday, Angulo enjoyed his best performance for Regis Le Bris' side since signing, with his display showcasing the attributes he possesses that warranted a £17.5m investment.

Against Leeds, Angulo took the joint-most shots (three) of any player on the field, with two of those on target and calling James Trafford into action with some crucial saves to deny the Ecuadorian his third second Sunderland goal.

Statistics aside, it was the eye test that proved most telling in terms of Angulo's performance against Leeds, providing some extremely positive signs for the coming months of his Sunderland career.

Angulo's performance was everything the Sunderland faithful have been crying out for from the club's wingers for so long: intense, dangerous, creative and exciting, whilst also displaying an endearing defensive work ethic that Le Bris demands.

Every time Angulo received possession on the left flank, his first intent was to drive at Leeds full-back Jayden Bogle, who ended up cynically fouling the in-form Sunderland star in the second half after a testing afternoon.

As well as testing Trafford twice, Angulo enjoyed some moments of technical brilliance with deft flicks, skills, and one-touch play in tight pockets, and the only thing missing from his exciting performance was the goal contribution.

Angulo seemed to have found a new level of confidence of which grew minute-by-minute within his eye-catching performance, intent on attacking rather than recycling possession through fear of losing the ball or making a mistake.

His performance against Leeds highlighted clearly why Sunderland spent a significant fee to sign the young winger last season, and now the onus is on Angulo to consistently put in standout displays akin to Sunday's on a consistent basis, which will see the goals and assists come and leave £30.8m summer signing Malick Fofana with a difficult task to displace him from Le Bris' starting XI.
