Sunderland beat Premier League rivals Brentford 3-2 in the Carabao Cup fourth-round tie on Wednesday evening.
Sunderland enjoyed a stunning 3-2 victory over Premier League rivals Brentford in the Carabao Cup fourth-round clash on Wednesday evening at the Stadium of Light to advance into the quarter-finals.
Regis Le Bris' side bettered the Bees courtesy of an electric start, seeing Chemsdine Talbi, Timur Tutierov and Malick Fofana net goals each within the space of 12 minutes to set Sunderland on course for a stellar victory, with Callum Wilson's late first-half and Igor Thiago's injury-time header not enough to conjure a comeback.
Le Bris made several changes from his Sunderland side that drew 0-0 with Leeds United at the weekend, granting Alan Browne a rare start at right-back and featuring exciting youngsters Jules Ahoka and Dayann Methalie.
Melker Ellborg stepped in for number one Robin Roefs, with Tutierov leading the line in place of Brian Brobbey, with attacking trio Talbi, Ta Bi, and Fofana in behind.

Both sides had openings in the early stages, with Ahoka fizzing an early shot wide of the Brentford post and Malick Diouf slipping Thiago in behind, whose attempt showed a lack of potency and was tapped wide of Ellborg's post.
Later in the first half, Brentford defender Jannik Schuster hit crossbar in a messy failed corner claim from Ellborg, with Michael Kayode's follow-up hitting the post.
Sunderland continued to progress possession well in their own half under pressure before Ellborg was called into action to make a stunning reaction save from Mamadou Sangaré to brilliantly keep the Bees at bay.
Minutes later, Sunderland took the lead after a deadly counterattack, courtesy of perhaps the easiest goal of Talbi's footballing career.
The Black Cats broke away with intensity, seeing Ahoka slip Ta Bi into a dangerous area down the right flank, with the young Ivorian's tame low shot missed by Brentford goalkeeper Hákon Rafn Valdimarsson, seeing the ball bounce back off the post and roll along the line before Talbi tapped it home to put Sunderland ahead after 27 minutes.
Less than two minutes later, Tutierov doubled the Black Cats' advantage in dynamic fashion once again, after some more excellent technical work in the box from Ta Bi to leave Diouf dumbfounded and square the ball for the young forward to net his second Sunderland goal in his last three outings.

Just before the 40-minute mark, Sunderland netted a third courtesy of Fofana, who opened his Black Cats account with a brave header at Brentford's backpost in yet another assist for the electric Ta Bi.
Unfortunately, moments later, it was not game over as former Newcastle United striker Wilson found the back of the net for Brentford from close range, giving the visitors a lifeline and sending the thrilling cup tie into the interval at 3-1.
Particularly in transition, Sunderland's young attacking quarter of Tutierov, Talbi, Fofana and Ta Bi looked electric and caused Brentford serious problems with sheer technique and intent that matched the intensity of the opening 45'.
Sunderland Vs Brentford - Second-Half Action
Le Bris made one change at half-time, seeing Diarra withdrawn and Chris Rigg replacing the midfielder, with the Senegalese midfielder's substitution worrying given that he returned from the sidelines recently.
Just before the hour mark, Thomas Meunier and Luke O'Nien were introduced by Le Bris to replace Tutierov and Alderete, in a clear shift towards defensive rigidity from the Black Cats boss to protect the lead.
Brentford had an opportunity to halve their deficit through substitute Vitaly Janelt, but his shot was blazed over Ellborg's bar.
Andrews' side continued to push for a second and dominated possession in the second 45', seeing Danso make an excellent block before O'Nien headed Tiago's effort clear off the line to keep Sunderland's two-goal lead intact. Until injury-time.
In the third minute of added time, an error from Ellborg saw the Bees bring another goal back through Tiago's header to make the closing moments more nervous than they should have been for Le Bris' side, who stood firm to see out the victory.
Sunderland's win over Brentford sent Le Bris' side into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals in improved goalscoring fashion, with the renewed impetus in attack during the first half making the significant difference for the Black Cats.
Hopefully, this confidence-exuding win can be the catalyst for an improved run in the Premier League to get the Black Cats off the bottom with Coventry City up next in the league on Saturday.
After full-time, it was announced that Sunderland will face fellow top flight strugglers Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in thr quarter-finals.
