Leeds United signed central defender Tarik Muharemovic in the summer transfer window, after he was heavily linked with a move to Sunderland.
After defeating the Black Cats 1-0 in a pre-season friendly, Leeds United appear to have beaten Sunderland both on the field and in the transfer department with centre-back Tarik Muharemovic.
Earlier in the summer transfer window, reports emerged that Sunderland were interested in signing Muharemovic from Serie A side Sassuolo, with the naturally left-footed centre-half potentially being the long-term successor to Omar Alderete at the Stadium of Light.
Following that, Leeds entered the race with Sunderland and fellow Premier League foes Newcastle United and Bournemouth to sign the Bosnian international defender ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
Unfortunately for the Black Cats, Leeds beat Sunderland to Muharemovic's signature, signing the 23-year-old for a substantial £34.1m fee from Sassuolo on a five-year deal to replace Pascal Struijk following his £20m switch to Brighton and Hove Albion.
Following his efforts at the World Cup for Bosnia and Herzegovina, and his subsequent move to the Elland Road outfit, Muharemovic ironically made his Leeds debut against the club who tried heavily to sign him in the summer window, Sunderland.
Unfortunately for the Stadium of Light hierarchy, he was one of, if not the best player on the Sports Illustrated Stadium turf in their pre-season affair.

In Leeds' 1-0 pre-season friendly win, Muharemovic gave his summer suitors, Sunderland, a first-hand account of why the Black Cats were looking to secure his services ahead of the upcoming season.
At the heart of a three-man Leeds defence, Muharemovic oozed class against the likes of Brian Brobbey and Enzo Le Fee, reading the game well and making multiple key defensive contributions, particularly with his block on a troubling low Trai Hume shot.
Not only was the former Juventus youth talent brilliant defensively, but he was also extremely comfortable in possession, on one particular occasion spraying a 60-yard diagonal switch of play to Leeds full-back Jayden Bogle with ease.
Muharemovic appeared to act almost as a left-footed version of Sunderland defender Dan Ballard, with his muscular frame matching his defensive acumen and making him a monstrous presence at centre-half.
Although centre-back was not a priority position for Sunderland to strengthen this summer, with those key areas being at left-back and right-wing, it is clear to see that the Black Cats' recruitment team identified an extremely exciting talent in the glossy 23-year-old defender.
As a result of the £34.1m fee that Sassuolo commanded to part company with the Bosnian, this significant outlay will likely have been the reason Leeds won the race for Muharemovic's signing this summer.
Evidently, it is important not to get carried away with one pre-season friendly performance, but if Muharemovic can perform to a similar level throughout the upcoming Premier League campaign for Leeds, then Sunderland will be left with serious regret after missing out on his signature.
