Sunderland are in discussions with left-winger Romaine Mundle over a new contract despite his struggles with injuries and failure to make an impact in the Premier League.
According to various recent reports, Sunderland are in discussion with left-winger Romaine Mundle over a new contract at the Stadium of Light, which has caused serious debate among the Black Cats faithful.
23-year-old Mundle has two years left to run on his current Sunderland contract, but the Black Cats are said to be intent on securing his long-term future at the club, having rejected multiple transfers offers for him this summer.
Sunderland signed Mundle in the mid-season window of the 2023/24 Championship campaign from Belgian Pro League outfit Standard Liege in a reported £2.5m deal, with the former Tottenham prospect going on to net six times in 52 Black Cats appearances.
Mundle scored five goals and notched two assists in 24 Championship outings for Sunderland in Regis Le Bris' debut season as manager in 2024/25, but has found action much harder to come by in the Premier League, with just 400 minutes in red-and-white in the top flight last season.
With Mundle, the consistent cause for concern since his arrival at Sunderland has been his persistent injury issues, which have blighted his development and time on the field, which is the catalyst for the controversy surrounding the club's contract call.

From Sunderland's perspective, it is clear that the club rate Mundle extremely highly and believe he has a high technical ceiling, given their intent to tie him down to a long-term deal after firmly knocking back Ligue 1 suitors for his signature this summer.
Le Bris clearly trusts and rates the former Spurs starlet highly, and Mundle would be a benefit on paper to the Black Cats with him classing as an 'association-trained' talent ahead of the Europa League campaign.
However, there is a plethora of reasons as to why some sections of the Sunderland fanbase are justifiably concerned about the decision to extend his contract.
Since his arrival at Sunderland in January 2024, Mundle has missed a significant number of games for the Black Cats due to multiple injury issues, with his hamstring appearing to be the major cause for time on the sidelines.
Last season alone, Mundle missed 19 games for Sunderland due to injury, which subsequently limited to just 16 outings in all competitions last season, with a return of zero for goals or assists.
Amid Mundle's struggles for fitness, Sunderland have shelled out a combined total of nearly £40m for left-wingers Chemsdine Talbi and Nilson Angulo, who are far ahead in terms of development and ability to impact at Premier League level, making him Le Bris' third-choice left-wing option at best.
Ahead of the coming season, Mundle has failed to shine in pre-season for Sunderland, with Talbi and Angulo, just weeks earlier, proving their potential on the global stage at the World Cup for their respective national sides.
It is a monumental show of faith from the Stadium of Light hierarchy to award a player, who has suffered three serious injuries and thus been sidelined for significant periods of time, and has yet to prove himself to be top flight ready having failed to notch a goal or assist when given the chance by Le Bris last season.
23-year-old Mundle has shown flashes of promise and brilliance at Sunderland, but those moments have been too far and too few, given his injuries and failure to impact at Premier League level thus far.
Mundle now will have his sights set on the upcoming season to truly prove his worth to Sunderland and vindicate this highly-debated contract call from the club's hierarchy.
