Sunderland have made an ambitious move to sign Jack Grealish on loan from Premier League rivals Manchester City in the summer transfer window, with a view to potentially making the move permanent at the end of the 2026/27 season.

According to The Athletic reporter David Ornstein, the Black Cats have made a bid to sign 30-year-old Grealish on loan, with Man City covering part of his salary, following his loan spell at Everton last season.

In addition, Ornstein adds that there is the potential for Sunderland to sign the England international permanently next summer when his contract at the Etihad Stadium expires after a trophy-laden six-year association at City.

City signed Grealish from his boyhood club Aston Villa for a staggering £100m fee back in 2019, and the attacker was a regular under Pep Guardiola in their treble-winning 2022/23 campaign, but fell down the Spaniard's pecking order due to injury issues and other signings.

As a result, Grealish joined Everton on loan last season and notched eight goal contributions in 22 outings for David Moyes' side before his campaign was curtailed by injury.

So far in the early stages of this season, Grealish has featured twice under new City boss Enzo Maresca, with two substitute appearances in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal and the weekend's 2-1 win over Bournemouth.

As well as Sunderland, Everton are also keen on bringing the attacking midfielder back to the Hill Dickinson Stadium this season for another campaign under Moyes' stewardship, and now it appears to be a battle between the two clubs for Grealish's services.

Jack Grealish Would Be A Stunning Signing For Sunderland

From a Sunderland perspective, the signing of Grealish would be a stunning addition to Regis Le Bris' squad, given the 39-time-capped England international's proven prowess in the Premier League and at the elite echelon of European football.

With Grealish capable of operating both as a number ten and as a left winger, the creative spark would be a monumental boost to Sunderland's attacking output and chance creation.

Grealish would depart City having scored 17 goals and notched 23 assists in 159 appearances for the Manchester outfit, and this proven goalscoring flair could take the stage at the Stadium of Light in the coming weeks if the stunning loan move materialises.

As well as Grealish, Sunderland have made a reported £30m bid for Marseille winger Igor Paixão, with the two clubs in negotiations over the potential transfer.

Sunderland's intent to sign both Grealish and Paixão illustrates the club's desire to add attacking spark and creative output to Le Bris' squad, which will be imperative as the Black Cats navigate their second season back in the Premier League and the Europa League venture.
