Sunderland travel to Portuguese second division side SCU Torreense in the Europa League on Thursday afternoon.
Sunderland travel to Portuguese second tier team SCU Torreense in the Europa League on Thursday afternoon in the Black Cats' first European away day fixture for over 53 years.
Inevitably, it will be yet another momentous moment in Sunderland's history and resurgence under the stewardship of owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and head coach Regis Le Bris, and one that is extremely important in the current context of the season.
Sunderland head into the Europa League trip on the back of three consecutive defeats in the Premier League, with defeats to powerhouses Arsenal and Manchester City before the international break, which were compounded by Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Brighton at the Stadium of Light.
In fact, Sunderland's most recent win in any competition came in the Europa League, with their historic 1-0 win over AZ Alkmaar to kick off their European campaign with an impressive victory over the Eredivisie title-favourites.
Le Bris' Black Cats will head off from the north east desperate for a victory to hopefully kickstart a winning run, that should see Sunderland right the wrongs from the deflating Brighton loss, if they can get the better of a side currently sat in the bottom half of the Portuguese second division.
Given that many Sunderland supporters may have never heard of SCU Torreense before the Black Cats were drawn against them in the league phase of this season's Europa League campaign, SunderlandRoundtable here runs you through everything you need to know about how Thursday's opponents have fared in 2026/27 heading into the fixture.

Firstly, it is important to contextualise how SCU Torreense qualified for this year's Europa League competition, given the fact that they last featured in the Portuguese top flight in 1992.
Towards the end of last season in late May, Torreense beat Portuguese giants Sporting 2-1 in the Portuguese Cup Final against all of the odds, becoming the first team on record to win the cup whilst playing outside of the country's top flight, which saw the Torres Vedras-based side qualify for European football for the first time in their 109-year history.
Torreense head into the clash with confidence in their abilities on the European stage, having impressively beaten Norwegian top flight outfit Lillestrøm 2-1 on the road in their opening Europa League fixture, courtesy of goals from midfielder Alejandro Alfaro and forward Manuel Pozo.

Last time out, Sunderland's upcoming Europa League opponents lost 1-0 to Tondela in a dramatic clash which saw Torreense reduced to nine men, with two red cards coming in the second half after a major altercation on the sidelines before a dramatic 90+10' winner saw Torreense suffer their third defeat of the league campaign in chaotic fashion.
On Thursday, Sunderland could win handsomely against the potentially rash side, or Torreense could prove to be another difficult test in a banana skin clash for the Black Cats, who head into the clash still as firm favourites, desperate for a win to resolve their recent losing run.
There is emotion, history, and importance to the current campaign on the line for Sunderland in Portugal on Thursday, and it is therefore imperative for Le Bris' side to rise to the occasion and secure a resounding win in Leiria.
