Sunderland are reportedly monitoring Harvey Elliott’s situation at Liverpool, but the Black Cats should be eyeing other targets.
As the summer transfer window kicks into full flow following the World Cup, Sunderland are reportedly interested in signing Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott this summer.
Last season, the England youth international spent the season on loan at fellow Premier League side Aston Villa, but severely struggled for minutes under Unai Emery and went on to make just four appearances in the 2025/26 Premier League.
Following the departure of Arne Slot from Anfield and the subsequent appointment of former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, this places even further uncertainty on Elliott’s footballing future at Liverpool, which has seen several top flight sides reportedly take an interest.
Reports from Football Insider suggest that Sunderland, as well as Leeds United, Crystal Palace and newly-promoted Coventry City are considering signing the 23-year-old this summer, who remains keen to fight for his future for the Reds under Iraola in pre-season.
However, despite the allure of the opportunity to sign the Liverpool player, there are several red flags that Sunderland should consider amid their reported interest in his signature.
Why Sunderland Should Not Sign Harvey Elliot From Liverpool
In terms of the potential of bringing Elliott to the Stadium of Light this summer, there are too many potential worries for the Sunderland hierarchy to consider, particularly with his struggles last season.
On the surface, the Villa loan offered Elliott a brilliant platform for game time away from Liverpool to regain his best form and make an impact for a top-six Premier League club.
However, the attacking-minded midfielder failed to make an impact for contention under Emery, and made just nine appearances in all competitions as Villa enjoyed a remarkable Europa League victory and fourth-placed finish in the Premier League.
Although Sunderland have been clever suitors under the club’s ownership of bringing in struggling young players and giving them a platform to perform at their best, the Black Cats can ill afford to take such risks next season with the stakes never higher in the Premier League and upcoming Europa League venture.
| Key Statistic | Harvey Elliott in 25/26 | Harvey Elliott for Liverpool |
|---|---|---|
| Games Played | 11 | 149 |
| Goals/Assists | 1/0 | 15/17 |
As well as the risks surrounding Elliott’s recent struggles, the financial aspect of the prospective deal is also a major consideration for Sunderland, with a fee in the region of £25m touted in the transfer and the Englishman’s significant wages.
In terms of Elliott’s profile, he operates both in the number ten role and at right-wing, but there are aspects of him that may be less suited to Sunderland, in comparison to other Black Cats target Matias Soule.
Elliott lacks the direct pace, compared to the likes of Soule or Chemsdine Talbi at Sunderland, to threaten opposition defences, which could see the Black Cats limited from counterattacking situations next season.
Although Elliot would arrive with pedigree for his trophy-laden exploits at Liverpool and potential to find his best form, there are too many fear factors for Sunderland to consider regarding the prospective big-money move, meaning that the Black Cats should focus on other targets this summer.
