Sunderland man Luke O’Nien replaced Omar Alderete at centre-half midway through the first half at Everton, and performed admirably to help his side to a 3-1 win.
Despite playing a pivotal role in the resurgence of Sunderland from the depths of League One to the top-half of the Premier League, Luke O’Nien has found minutes hard to come by this term.
The Black Cats fan-favourite was a mainstay in Regis Le Bris’ side who won promotion from the Championship last season, but given the jump in quality of opponents and teammates upon the top flight return, the Englishman has managed just 11 appearances and four starts.
Prior to Sunderland’s win at Everton, O’Nien’s last outing came in the dramatic 4-3 defeat at Aston Villa, when he lined up alongside Omar Alderete in the heart of defence.
Unfortunately on Sunday, Alderete was forced off on the 22-minute mark with injury, leading Le Bris to introduce the Sunderland stalwart with the scores 0-0, and his performance more than vindicated his boss' call.
Luke O’Nien was outstanding for Sunderland vs Everton
Entering the fray with the scores still deadlocked will have been an uncomfortable introduction for O’Nien, but the defender took to the Hill Dickinson turf with aplomb on his 328th appearance in red-and-white.
In his 70 or so minutes on the field, the former Wycombe man failed to put a foot wrong, and was pivotal to the defensive foundations for Sunderland’s comeback.
O’Nien made three crunching slide tackles to protect Robin Roefs’ goal, and by the end of the game had enjoyed the joint-most defensive contributions (11), made the most clearances (10) and won most duels (six) of any player on the field despite coming on as a substitute.
Additionally, the Black Cats veteran enjoyed a 75 percent defensive duel win rate, and was amply capable in possession with a 94 percent passing accuracy, rightly hailed as 'outstanding' by the club's media.
Aside from the statistics, O’Nien also made an acrobatic diving headed clearance to thwart a guilt-edged scoring chance for Toffees frontman Beto.
O’Nien, hailed as ‘Mr Sunderland’ by the Black Cats faithful, was instrumental to his side’s dramatic comeback which kept the club’s hopes of a European finish alive heading into the final-day visit of Chelsea.
The experienced defender has had his doubters this season, and has admittedly endured some testing times in the Premier League in light of his error in the Tyne-Wear derby win, but the Sunderland hero showed that he has the Premier League credentials to be called upon when needed.
For his spirited defensive display, against a testing opponent and in difficult circumstances as a substitute, O’Nien deserves immense praise from the Sunderland supporters.
As such, O’Nien was understandably elated at full-time, but chose to shine the light on his teammates rather than his brilliant individual performance.
Luke O’Nien hails Sunderland teammates after Everton win
Speaking to Sunderland’s media post-match, O’Nien said: “I'm really proud of the boys. I think today we're a product of 37 games of hard work and we brought that today in the second half.
“It was good for it all to click in the second half. We were slightly fine lines in the first half, between what we produced in the second half and not, so the gaffer's message at half-time was just 'keep going, keep doing what you're doing.'
"There's a little bit more quality, and I think the boys showed that in the second half.
“I think every win's special. Every win in the Premier League, every point is really hard and we said it in the team talk at the start, you're not given anything in the Premier League, so to show everybody come together like that, there's a whole team behind the team and everyone's kind of rewarded today, which is good.
On his own performance, O’Nien concluded: "I just go out there to try my best, and I've got good people around me…
"I've had the pleasure of training with the man of the match today, Enzo, (Le Fee) and Wilson (Isidor) and Bry (Brian Brobbey), so every single day I'm learning.
"When I'm not playing up against them guys and I'm trying to push them, and Bry has been going up against one of the best strikers in the Premier League, and I'm learning every single day. So, today was good.
"I'm going to go watch it back. I've got to get better and make sure that me individually and the team keep moving forward and keep getting better and I enjoyed it."
With Alderete injured and Dan Ballard suspended for Sunday’s decisive home clash versus Chelsea, O’Nien did himself no harm in terms of retaining his place in Le Bris’ starting XI for the 2025/26 season finale.
Given all he has done for the club in his eight seasons on Wearside, it would be fairytale-esque to see O'Nien send Sunderland into Europe against the Blues.
