Sunderland looked set to lose captain Granit Xhaka to Chelsea in the summer transfer window, but the veteran midfielder has confirmed his decision to stay at the Stadium of Light.
In remarkable news for the Black Cats faithful, it has been confirmed that Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka will stay at the club this summer, bringing an end to his prospective move to Chelsea.
Earlier in the window, shocking transfer reports emerged outlining that Chelsea wanted to sign Xhaka from Sunderland at the request of newly-appointed manager Xabi Alonso, who won the 2023/24 German top flight title with the Swiss veteran in the heart of his Bayer Leverkusen midfield.
Further reports published suggested that Xhaka wanted the Chelsea move to return to living in London, as he did for almost a decade during his time at Arsenal, and to work under the ex-Real Madrid boss once again.
In recent days, Chelsea's opening £8m offer for Xhaka was laughed out of the room by the Sunderland hierarchy, who continued to insist that their skipper was not for sale at any price, given his impact at the Stadium of Light in the 12 months since his arrival and his importance for the next season's Premier League and Europa League campaigns.
Sunderland's asking price for Xhaka was said to be around the £30m mark, which was some distance apart from the Blues' second reported bid in the region of £12m, and now it has been confirmed that both clubs were unable to reach an agreement.
On Friday afternoon, just a day after Xhaka's Switzerland beat Algeria 2-0 to advance to the next knockout round of the World Cup, Sunderland fans can breathe a collective sigh of relief with the news that the midfield metronome is set to stay at the Stadium of Light this summer.
Sky Sports News revealed that Xhaka will stay at Sunderland ahead of next season, despite being attracted by the proposition of working under Alonso again and returning to London.
Following discussions with the Black Cats hierarchy, Xhaka has "reaffirmed his commitment to Sunderland and now wishes to remain on Wearside."
Sky Sports adds that the main motivations behind Xhaka's u-turn decision are the "opportunity to lead Sunderland in European competition next season", as well as the club’s long-term ambition and trajectory of the project, which were crucial factors behind his decision.
Additionally, the Swiss veteran's connection with the Sunderland supporters, which may need repairing in some capacity after he heavily flirted with a shock switch to Chelsea, is said to have played an imperative role in his decision to continue the extremely promising project at the Stadium of Light.
Now, many Sunderland supporters will be waiting to hear Xhaka reaffirm his commitment to the red-and-white stripes from the horse's mouth once the World Cup has concluded, but for now, the knowledge that the Swiss star will be a Black Cat come the start of next season will have to suffice.
