With the summer transfer window several weeks away from opening, and the Premier League campaign winding down, attention from the Sunderland faithful is inevitably turns to the impending period of business.

Last summer ahead of their return to top flight football, the Black Cats recruitment team shelled out over £150m on transfers to equip Regis Le Bris with enough players at his disposal to help secure Sunderland’s safety.

Credit to the Frenchman and the transfer hierarchy above him, the Stadium of Light outfit have managed to not only survive, but to thrive, and vast credit to that impressive feat is owed to last summer’s acquisitions.

Seasoned professionals in the mould of Granit Xhaka and Nordi Mukiele moved to Wearside, alongside several of the finest young talents in European football, namely the likes of Noah Sadiki and Robin Roefs.

Worryingly for the Sunderland supporters, there is interest from one of the continent’s elite clubs, Bayern Munich, in his shot-stopping services.

Roefs has enjoyed an extremely impressive debut season in English football, establishing himself as one of the best young goalkeeper prospects in the Premier League in his first season as Sunderland’s number one.

Sunderland plucked the Dutchman from Eredivisie outfit NEC Nijmegen for a reported £11m fee in the summer, following Roefs’ first full professional season, and the 23-year-old shot-stopper has gone from strength-to-strength on Wearside.

In his 33 Premier League outings, Roefs has kept ten clean sheets, with his latest shut-out coming in the goalless home stalemate against Manchester United at the weekend.

During which, Roefs, who was recently awarded Sunderland’s Young Player of the Year award for the 2025/26 season, made an imperative stoppage-time save to deny Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha and ensure the spoils were shared.

And, according to journalist Alan Nixon on Patreon, it will not just have been the Sunderland contingent in the stands of Stadium of Light impressed with his strong stop.

Reportedly, German champions Bayern Munich “sent a top spy to watch Roefs” in action for the Black Cats against United, with the Dutchman emerging as a potential long-term heir to ageing Manuel Neuer’s illustrious throne.

Nixon additionally includes that Sunderland’s Premier League foes Chelsea are “also huge admirers of Roefs”, with the Blues seeking an improvement on Robert Sanchez in the wake of a disappointing campaign at Stamford Bridge.

Earlier last week, reports also indicated that Tottenham Hotspur were tracking Roefs ahead of the summer transfer window, but the relegation-threatened London outfit would be seen as a sideways or even backwards move for the shot-stopper.

From a red-and-white perspective, Roefs’ contract at Sunderland is penned until August 2030, meaning that the club would be in an incredibly beneficial position at any potential negotiation table this summer.

Either way, Sunderland would retain the services of one Europe’s top young shot-stoppers, or they fetch a sizeable fee to reinvest into other areas of Le Bris’ squad.
