Reports suggest Sunderland will not activate their option to purchase RB Leipzig loanee Lutsharel Geertruida in the summer transfer window.
With the summer transfer window approaching as the 2025/26 Premier League campaign concludes, the curious case of Lutsharel Geertruida’s Sunderland future continues.
The Black Cats recruited the Dutch international on loan from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig ahead of their return to the Premier League, and his acquisition was seen as a shrewd piece of business by owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and his transfer team.
However, the season has not gone as well as expected under Regis Le Bris, with the former Feyenoord man limited to just 15 starts and 26 appearances in the top flight this season.
As a result of his peculiar lack of gametime, and Sunderland’s option to purchase the defender for a fee in the region of £20m, there are question marks hanging over his immediate footballing future, with one report in Germany contradicting Le Bris’ latest on the matter.
Reports suggests Sunderland will not sign Lutsharel Geertruida permanently
The latest reports regarding Geertruida, from Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, state that “Lutsharel Geertruida will not stay at Sunderland beyond the summer.”
Additionally, often-reliable Plettenberg suggests that the versatile Dutchman is “likely” to permanently depart Leipzig this summer, and that “clubs across Europe’s top five leagues” are enquiring about Geertruida’s services.
Interestingly, this development contradicts the sentiments of the Sunderland boss.
Following Geertruida’s impressive display in the goalless stalemate at home to Manchster United on Saturday, Le Bris said: "I don't know (of any transfer decision), at the minute he's a player of Sunderland and he did well today, which was a real positive.”
As ever with transfer speculation, the truth will likely lie somewhere in the middle, but the developments do pose a pressing dilemma for the Sunderland hierarchy to solve.
Sunderland hierarchy face Geertruida transfer dilemma
The Geertuida-in camp would wonder whether Sunderland could realistically target a better, more versatile talent for around the £17m-£20m mark, who has already proven amply capable of contending in the top flight.
However, therein lies the debate, given that Geertruida has, for whatever reason, failed to nail down a consistent starting role under Le Bris, and the potential for those funds to be better spent in other areas of the squad or on younger talent.
Given that Le Bris has failed to offer an explicit answer, the rumour mill will continue to rumble as the season winds down as Sunderland grapple with a transfer dilemma they could potentially live to regret passing by.
Especially following his commendable performance against Matheus Cunha of United on Saturday, and in his previous start before Saturday when he impressed in the Tyne-Wear derby win at Newcastle United, there is growing sentiment amongst Sunderland fans that it would be a serious blunder to let the 25-year-old go.
