Sunderland look set to part ways with academy graduate Anthony Patterson in the summer transfer window.
With the 2025/26 season for Sunderland concluding with an outstanding seventh-placed finish, and subsequent qualification for the Europa League, attention now turns to transfers.
Upon their return to the Premier League in last year’s summer window, the Black Cats hierarchy added several high-calibre additions to Regis Le Bris’ side, at the same time as trimming down his wider squad.
As a result of promotion, several of the Frenchman’s squad who played pivotal roles in the Black Cats’ victorious Championship campaign were loaned out this season, leaving their futures on Wearside uncertain.
One of which, is Academy of Light graduate Anthony Patterson, who was last season’s number one goalkeeper, and now the latest reports suggest that he will be ending his over 10-year association with Sunderland this summer.
Sunderland Set 'At least £8m' Asking Price For Anthony Patterson
Unfortunately for Patterson, his heroics in the Championship play-off final win over Sheffield United were not enough to convince Le Bris that he had the credentials to be trusted as Sunderland’s Premier League shot-stopper.
Patterson’s last contribution between the Sunderland sticks was to somehow keep an emphatic header from then-Sheffield United forward Kieffer Moore, and set his side on course for their dramatic comeback win to seal promotion.
This season, with Sunderland signing Robin Roefs as their new number one and adding Melker Ellborg as his deputy, Patterson fell down the goalkeeping pecking order and was loaned out to Championship outfit Millwall for the second half of the season.
Patterson impressed on loan at the Lions, keeping seven clean sheets in 16 Championship outings, but could not get former Sunderland boss Alex Neil’s side over the line as they fell to defeat to eventual play-off final winners Hull City in the semi-finals.
With the season over, Patterson returns to Wearside with his footballing future seemingly away from the Stadium of Light, but the 26-year-old is not short of suitors for his shot-stopping services.
Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie revealed on X that “Sunderland will listen to offers of at least £8m for goalkeeper Anthony Patterson this summer.”
He added that “Wolves, Wrexham & Millwall are amongst the Championship clubs keen.”, meaning that the Englishman would be moving to a side fighting for promotion to the Premier League once again next season.
Anthony Patterson's Sunderland Exit Makes Sense For All Parties
Patterson has two years left to run on his Wearside deal, and with Sunderland’s double-promotion winner impressing in the second tier at Millwall, the Black Cats are in a commanding financial position and could reinvest that £8m-£10m well in the window.
Evidently, Le Bris and the Black Cats hierarchy had reservations over whether Patterson would perform at Premier League level, but he would be a sensible bit of business for any promotion-chasing Championship side.
On Patterson’s part, he may feel aggrieved not to have been given his chance to compete at Sunderland this season, but at 26-years-of-age he needs to find a new permanent long-term footballing home as he enters the prime of his career.
However, the academy graduate, who has featured 169 times for Sunderland, would depart with well wishes from the club and supporters for his imperative role in the Black Cats’ resurgence from League One back to the top flight.
