Liverpool's Andy Robertson has directly responded to speculation regarding a move to Celtic in the summer.
Andy Robertson has been constantly linked with a move to Celtic for a few years now. The Scotland national team captain was part of the Hoops' youth setup growing up but was allowed to leave very early on, as it was thought that he was 'too small' to make it at the professional level.
Well, that has to go down as one of the worst decisions in Celtic history. Not only did Robertson go on to become a professional footballer, but he also became one of the best ever in Scottish football.
Robertson has won everything possible with Liverpool and he will be captaining Scotland at the World Cup this summer, which will be their first appearance at the tournament since 1998.
Beyond that, there is a bit of uncertainty around the future of Robertson. In January, he was heavily linked with a move away from Liverpool, with Tottenham Hotspur believed to be interested in signing him. That move did not end up happening.
In the summer, his current deal at Anfield is set to run out though. And it is unclear whether he will be handed an extension or not. He is no longer a nailed-on starter at Liverpool and might want to leave himself.
That has resulted in heavy speculation that he could be headed to Celtic. In the past, Robertson has admitted that he would want to pull on the jersey of his boyhood club one day.
According to The Celtic Way, when asked about the speculation, Robertson said: “It’s not really one to talk about.
“Obviously I was at Celtic as a kid and had a season ticket, that’s not a secret. But it’s not something I really want to get into.
“The options that are on the table for me at the minute will stay private and that’s the way I’ve always done it. People can talk and there’s been a lot of talk around it, where I’m going to go next. I’ve seen it, but I stay away from it all now.
“That’s part and parcel of it. Me and my wife have had a good laugh about some of it to be honest. Let’s see what happens, what the next destination is and take it from there.”
To be honest, it does not feel like the timing is right for Celtic to bring in someone like Robertson. The club already have Kieran Tierney at left-back. The Scotsman was brought in as a free agent last summer after his contract ran out at Arsenal. The biggest question surrounding him was his injury history. Fortunately, he has remained fit for the most part.
On top of that, he is expected to be on a significant salary package. Do Celtic want two of their highest-paid players at left-back?
Marcelo Saracchi has impressed on loan from Boca Juniors as well, and there have been suggestions that the club could be looking to sign him on a permanent basis in the summer.
So, signing Robertson at this point feels a bit needless, especially as the club need to strengthen in several other positions across the pitch. As far as Celtic's problems go, left-back is not anywhere near the top of the list.
