Celtic appear to be getting ready to make a move for a 'Japanese genius' having said goodbye to Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda this summer.
None of the iconic Japanese trio of Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate is any longer at Celtic following this summer transfer window. The three, brought to the club by Ange Postecoglou, achieved pretty much everything possible in the green-and-white jersey and have left looking for fresh challenges.
Obviously, it has been quite some time since Kyogo has left and he has struggled massively in his post-Celtic career.
It remains to be seen how things turn out for Hatate and Maeda. The former joined Burnley this summer, while the latter moved to Ipswich Town.
Of course, Celtic will know the value of a brilliant Japanese player, having had so many at the club over the years. And now, it looks like they are already planning a move for a Japan international who has been described as a 'genius'.
Celtic eyeing move for Japanese international already
The player we are talking about is Ryoya Morishita. The Japanese international is currently on the books at Blackburn Rovers and it is believed that the Hoops already tried and failed to sign him this summer in a late move. But they are expected to try again.
According to a report from Glasgow World, Alan Nixon wrote on his Patreon: "Celtic are planning a raid for Blackburn’s Japanese genius Ryoya Morishita.
“The Scottish champs made a very late move for Morishita in a frantic move as the clubs discussed a potential deal for Reo Hatate. Morishita has caught the eye as an attacker with the skills to open up defences and despite his age Celtic are keen on a deal. Blackburn could not sell Morishita so late - even at the prices mentioned - but that will not put off Celtic. There are still funds for a player in that role and Martin O’Neill is likely to revisit the move in.”
So, do not be surprised if Celtic go looking for Morishita in the winter transfer window. It is not the type of move that the Hoops usually make though.
Who is Ryoya Morishita, the Japanese international Celtic failed to sign this summer?
Morishita is 29 years of age, so very much in his prime. Celtic, on the other hand, are often happy to stick to talents who are in their early 20s and have room for growth, so that they can be moved on for significantly higher transfer fees in the future.
Morishita is a full Japanese international. But he has made only three appearances for Japan. So, it is not like he is a regular starter for the Blue Samurai.
Also, he currently plays in the Championship for Blackburn Rovers. Other than that, he has played for Legia Warsaw.
The rest of his football was played back in Japan. So, in no way is Morishita someone you would put down as a sure success if Celtic signed him.
That being said, it is quite evident that the club rate him quite highly. It remains to be seen if they do end up making a move for the Japanese international in the winter or not.
This is one to keep an eye on. But for now, Celtic need to focus on what lies ahead. Next up is a game against St Johnstone, followed by a League Cup quarter-final at Ibrox against the Rangers.
