It is rumoured that Celtic are closing in on a move to sign the French international for free.
It is quite obvious that Celtic did not do enough in the summer transfer window. And one way to fix some of their issues would be to sign players who are still available as free agents.
Obviously, we have seen Celtic take advantage of the free agent market in recent times. Kelechi Iheanacho proved to be an excellent signing for the club. And letting him go this summer was a mistake.
Now, it looks like the club might be looking to dip into the free agent market for a midfielder as the club's midfield department clearly lacks some steel at this point in time.
Rumours suggest Celtic are closing in on signing former Chelsea and AC Milan midfielder
Rumours doing the rounds online suggest that Tiemoue Bakayoko has been training with Celtic. There are also claims which claim that he was set to undergo a medical before joining the club.
It remains to be seen how accurate they turn out to be. For now, there is no confirmation on the matter. But considering how far and wide the rumours have spread, there has to be something going on in the background at the very least.
Obviously, when it comes to pedigree, there is no doubt that Bakayoko has it in spades. He is the level of talent and proven quality that Celtic should always be targeting.
He came through the ranks at Rennes but it is at AS Monaco that Bakayoko first made a name for himself, as he had a season in which he was one of the best midfielders in the Champions League.
That earned him a move to Chelsea. And it never really worked out for the French midfielder at Stamford Bridge, as he failed to make the adjustment to life in the Premier League.
That did not stop him from turning out for one elite club after another. He would go on to have loan spells at AC Milan, Napoli and AS Monaco.
In fact, Bakayoko had multiple loan spells at AC Milan. So, it just goes to show how highly he was regarded for his qualities, despite his struggles in a Chelsea shirt.
The obvious problem with signing Bakayoko right now
Ultimately, Bakayoko has not played a minute of competitive football in almost two years now. So, signing someone like him is a risk for this Celtic team. One cannot overlook that.
At his best, Bakayoko would be an incredible addition to this Celtic midfield. But is he capable of producing that football these days?
If Bakayoko has actually been training with Celtic, then the club would have a good idea about that. And if they do end up signing him, it would be cause for optimism.
It is worth mentioning that this is not the first time that Celtic have been linked with Bakayoko. It is believed that they were close to signing him earlier in the year as well, before making a move for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain instead. Yet, it looks like the Frenchman is back on their radar.
