Celtic were able to come out with a win against St Mirren away from home but the fans were not happy with what the referee did on the night.

Celtic were handed a tough challenge by St Mirren in Paisley. The home side were second in the league entering this matchweek, so that should not come as any surprise. They have been brilliant so far this season.

But ultimately, Celtic were able to prevail. They came back from behind to win 2-1, thanks to goals from Liam Scales and Yang Hyun-jun.

That does not mean that the game was without its controversy. And one moment did not go down well with the Celtic supporters.

It had looked like Shim Mheuka, on loan from Chelsea, had scored his first goal in Celtic colours when he showed his strength and composure to find the back of the net deep into added time.

The joy did not last long though as eventually, it was ruled out for offside following a VAR check. But the methods that were adopted did not make much sense to Celtic fans.

VAR creates controversy

VAR was at the centre of controversy all night as it seemed that communications broke down between the studio and the referee.

And by the time the Mheuka strike was ruled out, a lot of Celtic fans had had enough. One wrote: "A farce VAR couldn’t get a line on the defender. If the technology can’t work then for offside the referee should stick with the onfield."

Another said: "All the talk about the worst-ever decisions last season and that's it right there. A ref overruling the on-field decision by guessing at a freeze frame. If VAR can't draw the lines, you go with on-field."

Of course, this was not the first Celtic goal that had been ruled out on the day. Before that, Camilo Duran's strike had also been adjudged offside.

The only positive coming out of this is that the decisions did not end up having an impact on the game. Celtic were still good enough to take home all three points and maintain their perfect start to the campaign.

It was far from comfortable and almost reminded the fans of last season's results, when the club dug deep and found a way to win.

That being said, it feels like there is still a gear or two more in this team. Some of the players still need some time to settle.

Is Shim Mheuka the answer for Celtic?

Mheuka might be the perfect example of that. In the cameos that he has made so far, he has looked like a handful for opposition defenders.

As I have discussed in the past, this is not just another youngster who has been brought in because he is from the Chelsea academy. Mheuka has real potential and signed a long-term extension with the Blues before arriving.

They see him as someone who can be a first-team player in the future. And do not be surprised if he ends up contributing a lot more than expected to this Celtic first-team over the course of the campaign.
