Celtic have been handed some bad news ahead of their game against Motherwell.
Celtic will need to bounce back right after the international break, having gone into it on the back of a three-game losing streak. The need for a confidence-boosting win is clear.
Celtic's first game right after the international break is one against Motherwell, before taking on Benfica away in Portugal in the Europa League.
So, it is important for Celtic to go on and get a result against Motherwell. But unfortunately, it is unclear whether they will have one of their most important players available or not.
Celtic player sent home from international duty due to illness
The overall quality of Benjamin Nygren's game might divide the opinion of the supporters but one thing that cannot be questioned is his ability to affect a game with his goals and assists.
So, with Celtic in a tough spot, they will want to have someone like Nygren available against Motherwell. But his availability for the match seems to be up in the air.
Nygren has been sent home from international duty as a result of a sickness bug that is believed to have spread in the Swedish national team camp.
According to The Scottish Sun, the Swedish FA said: ”All of the players who have suffered illness are not expected to recover in time for Monday’s match and have all therefore left the camp and returned home.”
Now, if Nygren is not expected to recover in time for Monday's game for Sweden, will he be back to full fitness less than a week later when Celtic will take on Motherwell?
That remains to be seen. And the issue could be further magnified due to the fact that Celtic are particularly weak in midfield right now.
Celtic's midfield is a problem right now
Arne Engels left Celtic in the summer for West Ham United. And it is believed that Martin O'Neill was not happy with how the club went about trying to find a replacement for him. One could easily argue that they failed ultimately.
Reo Hatate left as well. And while he did not play regularly as a starter under O'Neill, nobody can deny the Japanese midfielder's talents.
With both now gone, Nygren is one of the few midfielders that O'Neill can rely on. At least we know what we will get from the Swede, which is a consistent outlet for goals and assists.
One would hope that the illness is not something that will keep him out of the Motherwell game as well. If it does, do Celtic have enough quality in midfield?
One positive piece of news from this international break is that Mika Baur was given his debut for Germany and has impressed Jurgen Klopp.
