The Celtic hero has officially announced his retirement from football at 34 years of age.

Tyrese Campbell to Celtic Transfer Update

It is always a bittersweet day when you see a Celtic hero make the decision to retire from the game. There are so many memories that are bound to flood and so much to be grateful for. Today is one such day.

Victor Wanyama might have played just two years for Celtic and made 91 appearances, but he will always be remembered as a club hero.

He scored 13 goals for Celtic, none more important than when he found the back of the net against FC Barcelona on that famous night under the Parkhead lights.

That game is talked about to this day, and forever will, as Celtic took down an iconic Barcelona team that featured the likes of Lionel Messi, Xavi, Andres Iniesta and many more. For many, that goal will be Wanyama's lasting legacy in Celtic colours, even though he did win three trophies during his time with the Hoops, including a couple of league titles. The first two of the club's 9IAR run.

Well, Wanyama has come out today and announced on his Instagram that he is retiring from the game. He wrote: "Today I announce my retirement from football. Four different countries. Six different clubs. A boy from Muthurwa with a big dream, carrying a nation’s pride every time I stepped onto the pitch. To my family, friends, agent, the fans, and the coaching staff that helped me throughout my career - Thank you for walking this journey with me. I now take my next step into coaching where I will be completing my UEFA A License this year."

Wanyama would go on to have a brilliant career after leaving Celtic as well. He joined Southampton, as so many of the Hoops' best did during that period of time.

Wanyama would go on to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League at Southampton before earning himself a move to Tottenham Hotspur.

With Tottenham Hotspur, he would make the final of the Champions League, but fell short at the final step. Yet, it has to go down as one of the greatest achievements in Spurs history.

He would leave Spurs for CF Montreal, and during this period of time, he would be linked with a return to Celtic on multiple occasions. A few times, it had looked to be on the cards as well but it never ended up happening.

Ultimately, Wanyama did return to Scotland, reuniting with his former Celtic boss Neil Lennon at Dunfermline Athletic.

On a personal note, Wanyama was the first player that I had the chance to interview, and he was very kind with his time. An incredibly humble human being.

Now, at 34 years of age, he has announced his retirement from the game. We would like to wish him all the best of luck in his next step in football. Thank you, Victor.
