Celtic are one of the clubs to be linked with a move for the Sheffield United striker, heading into the summer transfer window.
It is no secret that Celtic need to sign a striker or two in the summer. The Hoops tried to fill the void temporarily this winter by bringing in a couple on loan deals, with options to buy included in them. Unfortunately, neither has been able to meet the required standards.
Tomas Cvancara was brought in from Borussia Monchengladbach after spending the first half of the campaign out on loan in Turkey. The Czech striker has had his moments, but ultimately, Celtic would have been hoping for a lot more than two goals in 11 appearances.
On the other hand, Junior Adamu arrived from SC Freiburg and scored on his debut for Celtic. Since then, he has not found the back of the net and appears to be behind Cvancara in the pecking order.
So, do not be surprised to see both return to their respective Bundesliga clubs in the summer.
Of course, Celtic will need to find replacements. And hopefully, long-term ones. One striker they have been linked with in recent weeks is Tyrese Campbell of Sheffield United.
Campbell has a contract with Sheffield United until the summer of 2027. There is an uncertainty around his future at the moment. If an extension is not agreed upon, the club might decide to part ways at the end of the season rather than risk losing him for free a year later.
Even Sheffield United manager, Chris Wilder does not sound sure about what the future holds when it comes to Campbell. According to the Daily Record, he said:
"He's under contract. Those discussions that will be going on and if he's with us, then I will be demanding. I won't be asking. There'll be no shortcuts for anybody.
“But getting Ty back up to the levels in the season that he had last season, will be key. And if I do and we do, then we've got a really good player on our hands. But the future will take care of itself."
The comments stem from Campbell's dip in numbers this season. He scored 11 times in the previous campaign but has found the back of the net just six times in 25/26.
Unfortunately, Campbell won't be able to add to those numbers either. That is because he has been ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery. He is expected to be back in time for pre-season though.
Of course, there is no guarantee that he will still be with Sheffield United by that point in time.
Celtic signing Campbell will come with its fair share of risk though. He has never been a prolific goalscorer, which is what the Hoops need at this point in time.
Celtic have already brought in two such strikers in Cvancara and Adamu, and neither has been able to add to their numbers just by virtue of playing for a ball-dominant team. So, the Hoops will be trying the same thing again, if they sign Campbell.
They might be much better placed if they bring in someone from a lesser-known European league who is scoring goals for fun right now.
