Celtic have joined the race to sign the 22-year-old Liverpool midfielder, who is already familiar with Scottish football.
Celtic will, or at least should, be looking to strengthen their squad all across the pitch. The club's recruitment over the last few years has been far from the mark and they have not been able to make the necessary adjustments to the team, when key players have left.
As a result, the squad has gradually gotten weaker to the point that they are now struggling to compete against Scottish teams on a weekly basis. Not too long ago, Celtic were winning domestic trebles for fun.
Somehow, Hearts are leading the Premiership title race with just seven league games left to go. On the other hand, the Rangers are ahead of Celtic as well.
No matter how this Premiership title race ends for Celtic, either in victory or defeat, it will be time for the club to make some quality additions in the summer. And it looks like a Liverpool player, already familiar with Scottish football, is on their radar.
According to Football Insider, Rangers and Celtic have joined the race to sign Luca Stephenson. They have been keeping tabs on the Liverpool loanee's performances for Dundee United.
Stephenson can play both in midfield and in defence, and has spent the previous two seasons on loan at Dundee United.
Now 22 years of age, he might be looking for some stability, which might open the door for Celtic to make their move for the Liverpool youngster.
Of course, the Rangers are believed to be in the race to sign him as well, and after the level of investment the Ibrox side have made under their new ownership, it would be a mistake to consider them as second-best in every transfer race also involving Celtic.
It is worth mentioning that Celtic have been linked with a number of Liverpool players in recent years. But they have rarely been successful in getting deals done.
The one player they did sign was Nat Phillips, who was brought in on loan from Liverpool. But the defender was not able to impress at Celtic and left in the middle of the season, going down as a transfer flop. So, just because a player is brought in from Anfield does not mean that his addition will go down as a success story at Parkhead.
It remains to be seen if Celtic are successful in signing Stephenson or not. The fact that he is already proven in Scotland is a positive.
