It is believed that Celtic are keen on exploring a move for a goalkeeper who looks set to become a free agent in the summer.

Signing a goalkeeper is going to be a necessity for Celtic in the summer transfer window. Kasper Schmeichel has been their first-choice between the posts for the majority of the previous two seasons.

It has now become clear though that Schmeichel played a large chunk of it while carrying an injury. That was further aggravated recently.

Schmeichel now finds himself staring at a 12-18 month rehab at 39 years old. So, not only has he played his last game for Celtic but he might never play again at all.

If this is indeed the end for Schmeichel, we can only thank him for his service and wish him the very best moving forward.

As for the goalkeeping spot, Celtic will need to make an addition, whether that is a starter or someone to cover for Viljami Sinisalo, if the club are convinced that the Finnish international is the man for the job between the posts at Parkhead.

Interestingly, it looks like Celtic do have their eyes on signing a goalkeeper from one of their Scottish Premiership rivals, who could become a free agent in the summer.

According to Football Insider, Celtic are keen to explore the possibility of a move to sign Jon McCracken on a free transfer this summer. The Dundee goalkeeper is among a number of candidates that they are assessing at the moment.

McCracken has had a standout campaign with Dundee FC this season. And while he would not be a headline-grabbing signing for Celtic, he is one that could be a very decent addition despite going under the radar.

Based on this season's performances, the Scottish goalkeeper has been better than both Schmeichel and Sinisalo.

That being said, it would be a bold move on the part of Celtic if they do go out and sign the Dundee FC goalkeeper as their new number one. It is much more likely that they would bring him in as a cover option, if they do so at all.

A lot of Celtic fans might be more keen to see the club go out and sign a proven goalkeeper to come in as the new number one. Of course, it remains to be seen how the club view the situation.

As for McCracken, he could be a very decent addition to this Celtic squad, especially if available as a free agent. We are unsure how much football he will get to play though.
