Celtic are lining up the 40-year-old manager as the replacement for Martin O'Neill.
Martin O'Neill's immediate future at Celtic Park remains a matter of uncertainty. There have been suggestions that the Northern Irishman could choose to walk away. So far, nothing has happened in that regard. But if results do not improve, that could be a very real possibility.
In the long run, it is quite clear that Celtic will need to find a proper replacement for O'Neill. Even in the best-case scenario, it is likely that he will leave next summer.
So, who could that replacement be? Well, it looks like Celtic are already lining up a move for a former Manchester United coach.
The suggestion comes from former Celtic player Aiden McGeady. He has shared about the whispers he has been hearing when it comes to the managerial situation at Parkhead.
Aiden McGeady shares what he has heard about next Celtic manager
According to CeltsAreHere, McGeady said on Open Goal about the matter: "I have heard Kieran McKenna is also lined up for next year. I heard that.
“People were saying that to me; I was like, ‘Kieran McKenna was on £6million a year at Ipswich.’”
Of course, McKenna has been heavily linked with the Celtic job in the past as well. But for one reason or another, it did not happen back then.
The situation has changed since then though. McKenna is without a club at the moment, having left Ipswich Town in the summer.
That is a club he had taken charge of while they were in League One. He guided them to Premier League promotion on two occasions within the space of five years.
Is Kieran McKenna a realistic option for Celtic?
It remains to be seen what the future holds for McKenna. One would imagine that more lucrative opportunities might be available elsewhere.
Premier League clubs might be interested in a manager who had overachieved for years at Ipswich Town. There is certainly intrigue about what he can do at a club that is in a position to compete.
Obviously, those jobs rarely become available. And when they do, the fans expect big-name managers. McKenna does not fall under that category.
That has not stopped McKenna from being linked with Manchester United and Chelsea in the past. Tottenham Hotspur could end up becoming a realistic destination as well, as Roberto De Zerbi is not a million miles away from being shown the exit door.
Amid all this, do Celtic have a realistic chance of landing the signature of McKenna? Well, it might depend on what he wants in his next job.
If McKenna wants to compete for trophies on a consistent basis and get a taste for European football, there are not many better places out there than Celtic.
